About Tony Mackay Jp.

I am a highly experienced Defence sector specialist, with 21 years of service with the Australian Regular Army. During my military career, I operated in a wide range of roles including technical, logistics, project management and leadership. I discharged from the Army in mid-2008 but have continued to focus my work on Defence and Defence Industry through numerous consulting and contracting engagements. Since leaving the military, I’ve held leadership positions in the Australian Public Service (APS), as well as in private industry with organisations such as APP Corporation, Ventia, and McMahon Services Australia. During my tenure with the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) as the Head of the Office of the CEO and Chief of Staff, I served as a member of the Executive Board of Management and oversaw the Audit and Risk Committee. In the last 10 years, my focus has been on building capability within organisations and helping deliver complex programs through the application of modern leadership methods. My passion is growing organisational capability through people, particularly within the Defence sector. In 2014, I started INSYNC Management Solutions, a leadership coaching, mentoring, and training consultancy, with the goal of helping leaders lead in volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) circumstances. I do this by challenging current thinking and perceptions. I help my clients think critically and systematically, allowing them to overcome their fears, remain calm and solve complex problems through rational thought. In 2021, I was appointed as a Justice of the Peace for South Australia. This is a voluntary appointment where my main responsibility is to act as an independent and objective witness for legal documents and proceedings. This appointment allows me to continue to serve the community through ongoing public service.

Tony is a Defence weapons specialist with more that 20 years of direct military experience gained through his service as an Artificer Armament in Australia Regular Army. The first half of Tony’s military career included service with Infantry and Commando units were he provided direct technical supported to operators. Tony served five years with Mechanized Infantry where he developed his technical skills working on 0.30 and 0.50 calibre heavy machine guns, direct fire anti-armour weapons, mortars, sniper rifles and general service assault rifles and pistols. During his service with 4 Commando, Tony further develop his knowledge of military weapons working on the full range of SF weapons including MP5s, shot-guns, grenade launchers and anti-materiel rifles. The second half of Tony’s military service saw him engaged in senior logistics and specialist technical roles including as the Senior Technical Advisor to Defence for Armament Systems. In this role, Tony led a team of weapons and electro-optics specialist responsible for the acquisition and sustainment of the Australian Defence Force’s fleet of weapons. On leaving the military, Tony held senior roles in the public and private sectors, primarily focused on Defence and national security.
