Manager Of Business Support Services

Current

Cobden, Victoria, Australia

At its heart this role leans on my experience within the OHS profession but also taps into the broader set of skills and experiences I've gained across the arc of my career. - The role carries, as its core, responsibility for the full array of OHS activities for a mid-level rural construction company. This includes developing and maintaining core governance material - policies, procedures and subservient documentation - along with all the other elements linked to nurturing the businesses OHS performance.- I am accountable for developing/providing material that allows the business to successfully maintain pre-authorization status for several Tier-1 clients and reside as a 'panel' contractor to local municipalities.- I am responsible for HR tactical activity, and all activities linked to on-boarding personnel.- I maintain the company's digital persona: its website (www.greencon.com.au), its presence on digital platforms such as LinkedIn and facebook and how the company appears on the Cobden Business Network's site (ref: www.cobdenbusinessnetwork.org.au).- I provide tactical and strategic support for the company's marketing and public-relations activities.- I am accountable for the development and ongoing maintenance of the company's document management system.- I manage the company's training function, coordinating training experiences appropriate to maintain skill and experience sets.- I lead the company's development and approaches to strategic activities such as a SWOT analysis in 2022, and full review of its Strategic Plan in Q1 2024.

Ohs Advisor

Warrnambool, Southwestern Victoria

LI's list of available Industries my role at the WCC could slot into saw me lodge it in the 'Gov't Relations' bucket. Which was at its base level true, but it didn't provide an accurate picture of what I found myself involved with, in the usual day-to-day.I was an OHS Advisor for the Warrnambool City Council. WCC serves an immediate population of about 35,000 residents within a broader regional catchment of close to 120,000. To paraphrase the Council's CEO (back then, anyway. Before he was ousted in mid-2020), evidently I worked in one of the most vertically integrated businesses you could care to perceive of. The WCC offered a huge breadth of activity I found myself involved with, on any given day.In addition to the suite of 'Rubbish, Rates and Roads' any local Australian government authority is typically seen as responsible for, the WCC... -> Provides services in the elderly persons arena; -> Manages the Meals On Wheels delivery service; -> Looks after more than a dozen child-care/kindergartens; -> Is the waterway manager of all Warrnambool's rivers and its harbour; -> Manages the city's major tourist attraction; -> Manages two holiday parks, its art gallery and professional theatre; -> Manages the city's aquatic centre, including its gymnasium and exercise facilities;-> Manages the city's sports stadium, along with another gymnastic provider; -> Manages Warrnambool's Botanic Gardens; -> Manages the city's stockyard; -> Looks after two lighthouses; -> Manages the city's breakwater; -> Manages most of the city's sports fields; -> Cares for the 58 roundabouts inside the city's boundary; -> Provides an essential on-call emergency service capacity, in case that's needed;-> Looks after the Lake Pertobe precinct; and -> Maintains the entire foreshore promenade and amenity. There is stuff I've missed in that list, but it provides a general idea of the breadth of activity I found myself engaged in at one stage or another.

Wheatstone Lng Project: Commissioning / Process Safety And Health Advisor

Onslow, Western Australia

WLNG is located 12 km west of Onslow on WA's Pilbara coast. The Project constructed two LNG trains (combined cap 8.9 MTPA), infrastructure for three future trains, a domestic gas plant and associated gas export infrastructure, drawing gas from offshore reserves.Wheatstone was my 10th Bechtel project. I worked for almost two years within the Project's marine scope; 12 months within the Project's core EPC ESH team and two years with the Project's Commissioning and Start-Up (CSU) Team.My marine safety and health role involved liaising with the Project's main marine subcontractors. Bam Clough (BCJV) constructed a 1.6 km long jetty and product export facility, LNG vessel mooring infrastructure and tug berths. BEST JV (Besix/Thiess) constructed a Marine Offloading Facility (MOF, including LO/LO and RO/RO) and a 1.2 km breakwater. Dredging International Australia which, among other things, dredged a 16km long channel to serve LNG cargo export vessels. And Bhagwan Marine provided a chartered fleet, supporting the Project's marine scope. I also provided ESH support to the port's inbound arrivals and the Project's quarantine facility, and lead safety liaison with KEJV (Kiewit/Ertech JV) during the install of a 2.2km marine-outfall pipeline.I moved into a direct role with the EPC ESH team in Q2 2015, performing as the EPC ESH Point of Contact for construction subcontractors like John Holland, Downer, Alcatel-Lucent (now Nokia); Alstom, KEJV and Schneider Electrical. In addition I acted as the ESH PoC for service subcontractors like ESST, Greyhound Australia, Veolia and Omega Security. I also provided secondary support to subcontractors like CAPE, Giovenco and NTC.In July 2016 I shifted into the CSU team, involved with process and commissioning safety. It was those final 24-months of my Wheatstone experience that truely opened my eyes to the detail behind process safety and the intricacies of commissioning a very large, potentially very hazardous, gas plant.

Bechtel is a global engineering, construction and project management company. Headquartered in San Francisco, the 115 year-old, privately owned company maintains 38 international offices, and employs over 50,000 people.I worked with Bechtel on 10 projects. Starting as an ESH Advisor in 1997, I moved into senior roles from 1999, gaining an excellent understanding of the various factors associated with large-scale construction like FEED, contract management, construction execution, commissioning and facility optimisation. The roles, performed on large-scale construction projects, required decisive conduct. I was responsible for championing and executing project ESH strategy, demonstrating technical expertise and communicating in typically challenging and complex environments. I have supervised and directed project’s ESH functions and developed and supervised the implementation of project ESH execution plans, management systems and tools.I am pragmatic and, as a member of project leadership teams, build rapport and working relationships with project stakeholders across all levels.Apr 1997-Apr 1999: ESH Advisor - Olympic Dam Expansion Project: South AustraliaApr 1999-Feb 2000: ESH Manager - Western Underground Gas Storage Project, VictoriaMar 2000-Feb 2002: Nightshift ESH Manager - Millmerran Power Project, QueenslandMar 2002-Jan 2003: Snr. Owner

Port Campbell Hostel

Great Ocean Road . South-West Victoria . Australia

I directed a company which provided total management services to operate the Port Campbell Hostel. The Hostel opened in late 2009 as a custom-built accommodation facility that caters for over-night and short-stay travellers. It targets the budget traveller and, until 2014, was owned by the Port Campbell Surf Life Saving Club: my client.Port Campbell sits in the heart of the Port Campbell National Park, which is almost at the western end of Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. Port Campbell is 12km west of Australia’s most visited single-point coastal attractions, the Twelve Apostles. The Apostles are visited by around 2.5 million people every year.I was awarded the Hostel's management rights after a tumultuous initial six months of its life. Bringing fresh eyes and experiences to both the business and local tourism area, my company provided the direction and energy to grow the hostel to a point where, today, it remains acknowledged within the Australian tourism industry as one of the country's premier rural backpacker / budget traveller accommodators. It was recently awarded Hall Of Fame status on TripAdvisor - the world’s largest traveller review site - and continues to rank as one of the top independent hostels in Australia on the world’s largest backpacker booking sites. While I was responsible, the business received three international tourism awards, two national tourism awards and several other industry specific awards.Operating the business required a 24/7 commitment. Success required my business to attend to each factor associated with providing roofed accommodation: strategic business planning; marketing, managing the digital presence; budgeting; staffing and meeting day-to-day operational needs. After returning to my earlier professional career in late 2013, I stepped away from the business in Q1 2014. And though hostel was sold shortly afterwards, it continues to grow its reputation and attract accolades from the industry.

Regional Public Relations Coordinator

Electricity Corporation Of New Zealand

Lower South Island, New Zealand

This was my first professional role following graduation from the University of Otago in 1993. I was initially employed by the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand, before transferring to Contact Energy in mid-1996. The role dissolved in the spring of 1996, which reflected the wholesale change of focus Contact Energy introduced to NZ's power supply industry at that time.I was responsible for three core functions: managing an industry interpretative visitor information centre in NZ's Central Otago; coordinating corporate public relations activities and applying a large sponsorship and grants program across the south of NZ's South Island. I was also responsible for coordinating tours through NZ's largest hydro power stations; managing information flowing into the public domain, coordinating PR activities to support corporate needs and managing large-scale events.
