Regional Chairs oversee all aspects of SSAFA volunteer activity across 8 Branches in the region, ensuring compliance in statutory aspects: delivery of welfare casework operations, GDPR, training, safeguarding of vulnerable adults, that all volunteers understand SSAFA policies and represent their views to central staff as well as income generation to pay for a regional office of 6 paid staff.

Volunteer Caseworkers are the lifeblood of SSAFA, supporting a growing number of people in need of financial, practical and emotional support. They visit clients to work out what type of help they need, find sources of support and arrange for clients to access it. Caseworkers also sign-post clients onto specialist local services for advice on benefits, housing, mental health, debt, finding work etc.

A central role influencing Government policy and promoting interests & welfare of Services Veterans & their families. Specific skills:• Chair and run effective meetings and promote a team approach.• Communication skills and ability to consider complex issues. • Recruitment of suitable members within public appointments guidance.• Advocate for implementing improved cross-Government support.• Raise awareness, within area through regional and community engagement. • Assist serving personnel, their families and veterans in accessing services and support.• Conduit for consultation by Ministers, Ministry of Defence and Service Personnel and Veterans Agency(SPVA)

Key Tasks.  Raising Awareness – creating step change and reducing stigma. Liaison – to facilitate raising awareness and achieve lasting outcomes. Information Gathering – to share best practice, pursue excellence and support delivery of a fully integrated service. Client Assistance – ensuring individuals are signposted promptly to appropriate treatment.

Effectively managed significant MoD facility, capital value over £800M, controlling annual £3 million activity budget (including income generation); responsible for strategic and resource planning to deliver infrastructure and support services (security, safety and fire, catering, retail & leisure, support services, grounds, hard facilities and staff management) for 4,000 military personnel and 350 civilian support staff clustered in 3 separate sites. As customer focus ensured effective delivery of services through 3rd party contracts gaining commercial acumen and experience in partnership working. Primary MoD Community Engagement focus and effectively promoted the Army with influential regional stakeholders, securing support and funding; competetively elected as Chair of a Local Strategic Partnership.

Head of strategic deployment for 15,000 NATO troops and Lead operational NATO Officer in theatre responsible for civil/military cooperation and reconstruction in Afghanistan. Responsible for influencing Ambassadors of donor nations and International Organisations to focus funds on critical projects in a holistic manner and assisting Afghan Government Ministries’ formulate strategy and priorities within the donor budget. Also planned and executed operations for major flood and earthquake relief and logistics/movement of over 145,000 people on Hajj pilgrimage.
