On January 20th, 2012 my five year old son Cole died from neuroblastoma cancer. Soon after I began a movement in his memory to get as many landmarks, buildings, bridges, etc. to light gold for September’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. I personally was able to get The Prudential Building, The Atlantic Wharf, The Zakim Bridge, The Battleship New Jersey and many other structures to light gold in September. I also worked with a group associated with the Jimmy Fund to have gold ribbons displayed at Fenway Park during Boston Red Sox games in September. These successes resulted in various media outlets reporting on my efforts to go gold from which I was able to have a forum to speak with many about the dire need for greater funding and more humane treatments needed by children fighting cancer. My tireless efforts have even led to an invitation from the White House to begin discussions on behalf of kids fighting cancer. I also worked with and guided others across the world in getting many buildings, bridges, and landmarks to hear our call and agree to light gold in September in order to increase childhood cancer awareness. There were groups and individuals from Ireland, Australia, Switzerland, and Canada that told me they were inspired and motivated by my achievements and passion and they then also had a great deal of success in getting gold displayed in their countries during September's Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Another accomplishment was spearheading a drive to get as many governors to agree to declare September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the states they represent. We ended up with 41 of the 50 governor’s granting our requests. The past two years we were able to get more gold being displayed in September across the world than ever before, I know this is just the beginning of much greater things to come.
