I'm co-founder, president, and head algorithm designer/programmer for Toonamation. We apply innovative math and image processing to render photos with striking cartoon, painterly, and graphic design looks that retain excellent temporal coherence when extended to video. Our tech is used in Red Giant's ToonIt, the premier cartoon effects plugin for After Effects and Final Cut Pro. It also powers a version of ToonIt for Photoshop and Aperture distributed by Digital Anarchy. Additionally I developed the skin-smoothing technology used in Digital Anarchy's multi-award-winning Beauty Box plugin and ported this tech to the CUDA language to run on desktop Nvidia GPUs.Most recently I implemented a variety of simulated art effects (many ported, some new), including my beauty enhancement skin-smoothing algorithm, in pure OpenGL for desktop streaming video and in OpenGL ES for photo and video apps on mobile devices. We protoyped for mobile in an Android app speed-enhanced for Nvidia Tegra tablets, but are currently testing a more generic version producing the same high-quality output on all mobile operating systems. To fill in more about my personal history, after leaving grad school, I worked for 10 years as senior scientist and project leader at CHI Systems Inc., developing medical expert systems through government-funded research. After leaving CHI Systems, I worked for a time as a self-employed artist, getting into state and national-level juried shows. I was interested in the intersection of art, programming, and math, and tried to devise new algorithms for applying artistic effects in the creation of each piece.
