About Christopher L.
I am a veteran player coach engineer and manager with fifteen years of experience in developing enterprise grade software in the DevSecOps space. I’ve worn many hats across many different sized organizations, helping them scale from startups to organizations with thousands of engineers.I started my career in games at EA and Zynga working on application development and productivity engineering tooling.I left the gaming space and became a Senior Engineer in DevSecOps in the Big Data space at Ancestry.com working on big data test tooling, observability, CI/CD, and Machine Learning computation for DNA analysis. I led a DevSecOps team testing and securing high performance mobile and web video streaming services at Ellation/Crunchyroll. I led an effort to develop developer productivity tools across the SDLC pipeline while working toward SOCII compliance efforts while Crunchyroll was being acquired.Intrigued with Fintech, I joined the DevSecOps team at Credit Karma working as a Senior Engineer to develop CI/CD pipelines, site reliability tooling, logging, and orchestration frameworks and led compliance certification efforts as they geared up to later be acquired by Intuit.I then went to develop custom adapters for open source tooling on the DevSecOps team at Quantcast as a Senior Engineer. Our main focus was CI/CD and test tooling, and working on a new open source GDPR compliance framework.I got bit by the startup bug and joined the DevSecOps team at a security startup, Expanse. My mandate at Expanse was stabilization to defeat growing pains experienced as they rapidly scaled. I then pivoted to implementing CI/CD pipelines, testing, and security compliance issues as Expanse worked with government agencies. I implemented developer productivity tooling along with DevSecOps and SRE processes at Parsable as a Staff Engineer. I Implemented enterprise grade security and CI/CD tooling during my tenure there as the company was growing from its initial startup roots.I am currently managing the Platform Engineering Developer Infrastructure team at Cradlepoint. My team is in charge of all of the tooling along the SDLC pipeline on a massive scale across dozens of products and Fortune 500 customers. Supporting five hundred engineers across dozens of teams, we maintain and steward their test and build tools, security tooling, and other DevSecOps tools and processes.
Listed skills include Objective C, Engineering Management, Git, Subversion, and 40 others.

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Engineering Manager
I was hired to staff and manage an Agile/Scrum technical team, the Platform Engineering - Developer Infrastructure Team. Our goal is to support, train, and have stewardship over processes and tools to enable engineers on software engineering teams to develop safe, secure, and efficient processes for every step in their software development lifecycle. My team owns the CI/CD pipeline tooling (Github/Jenkins), testing infrastructure (L1-L4 + testing tools), artifact storage and lifecycle use (Jfrog Artifactory, AWS Codeartifact, AWS ECR, etc.), Docker (Image testing, image security, standards and best practices), security tooling (Snyk/FOSSID, Gitlab/Github SAST scanning, open source license scanning and enforcement) , as well as developer productivity tooling efforts such as implementing waterfall RBAC permission schemas from Workday -> OKTA SAML applications. My team has a mandate to create, investigate, maintain, and provide self service tooling for CI/CD pipelines on Github/Jenkins to enable automated continuous delivery pipelines that allow engineering teams to make quick and repeatable deployments as often they desire. We also supported extensive testing efforts across all stages of the SDLC+CI/CD pipeline. My team is responsible for writing and maintaining processes, providing documentation, engineer training, and hands on help that allow all engineers to understand and utilize the portfolio of tools and processes the Developer Experience team owns. The team was pivotal in efforts to become FEDRAMP medium level and later planning for FEDRAMP high level compliance across the company.
Lead Staff Software Engineer
Hired as a lead onto the Productivity Engineering team to work on all third party and custom tools developers use during the SDLC. Was first hired to stabilize and then replace custom integration and deployment tooling and infrastructure to speed up development and to move toward a microservice based Kubernetes infrastructure.Implemented initial Kubernetes infrastructure for next gen microservices with Devops team. Led Devops/Tools teams over the course of two years to migrate all legacy infrastructure and code to Kubernetes. In addition all new code and infrastructure started to be developed as microservices in Kubernetes microservice based architecture.Promoted as lead staff engineer and led efforts to implement flows supporting new infrastructure and applications using CI/CD pipeline from scratch using Jenkins, Github, Jfrog, Spinnaker while retrofitting old deployment processes that did not use microservices. Was enlisted to lead initial security team/effort implementing DAST and SAST tools for such as Probely, Dependabot, and Jfrog Xray. Took part in SOC2 compliance audits.Led staff engineering team under CTO and Director of engineering to completely refactor all hiring and interviewing processes and practices.Led company to standardize all Confluence Wiki documentation, test documentation, API documentation, and all other technical writing across the company.Mentored, managed, and led many engineers directly as reports as well as across teams as part of being a Lead Staff Software engineer working on cross team initiatives.
Senior Software Engineer
Hired to newly formed Devops team under CTO to stabilize and handle influx of new engineers and products in pipeline for fast growing startup. Main goals were to replace and retrofit legacy infrastructure and tools for the entire company to accommodate long term growth and new products. Devops also acted as SRE team with On-call 24/7 365 days a year to support all these new products and teams while simultaneously attempting to replace old infrastructure and tools.Scope of team responsibilities included: Security, Monitoring (Elk/Prometheus/Sumologic), Infra + Cloud Infrastructure (AWS/GCP), Infrastructure as code (Terraform/Ansible/Docker/Kubernetes/Helm), Build and Release (Jenkins + AWS/GCP Kubernetes clusters), Database administration, and internal tooling. Worked with the testing and automation team which separated from Devops as its own team.In addition to shared responsibilities I was put in charge or migrating and replacing all components of our CI/CD pipeline which included Makefiles/Ansible/Ant/Maven/Gradle builds going through nine Jenkins instances, which I reduced to three, all with custom plugins/job configurations over about ~800 jobs and ~50 custom libraries. Worked with teams to eliminate and simplify on to as few Jenkins instances, plugins, libraries, and jobs as possible. Work with all teams to migrate all CI/CD flows to deploy as Kubernetes pods which were all previously done manually onto EC2 or using Elastic Beanstalk onto EC2.
Senior Software Engineer
Hired to stabilize and help lead Developer Tools team to re-architect existing infrastructure to be made highly available such as: a set of custom development tools known as the universal ticketing system, Jira, Confluence, Jenkins, Docker Registry,Artifactory, Github(Enterprise), Puppet, Salt, Nagios Etc. Worked to deprecate/replace many of these tools with better ones, off the shelf or custom. Team owned and supported company with responsibilities ranging from: site reliability, infrastructure, operations, security, CI/CD pipeline development, and internal tools. Within weeks of being hired took over generic on call for team. Since then provided support, on call or otherwise, for all infrastructure and tools in the company.Team was reorganized and merged with two other teams adding more pieces of custom shared infrastructure. I learned them and joined the on call rotation for the new responsibilities the team took on. Worked with every engineering team to rework and replace all Jenkins workflows, with thousands of jobs/plugins used by every engineer in the company. Worked with teams to prototype and make many new features, CI/CD workflows using Kubernetes workers. Migrated all old use cases to the new use cases while also taking advantage of new features and workflows available.Worked on a company wide set of EKS clusters in AWS for use by the whole company. Focusing on development, test, build, and deployment pipelines with new Kubernetes infrastructure. Making custom tooling for engineers in the company to interact with and use the new Kubernetes infrastructure.
Senior Software Engineer
Hired to Infrastructure Software Engineering(ISE) team responsible for site reliability, infrastructure, operations, and developer tools. ISE was the last line of defense for all business and 24/7 on-call support. Created an in house deployment tool and pipeline that supported legacy and later containerized microservices that the whole company infrastructure was migrating to using Jenkins and Ansible.ISE was split into different teams and due to every engineering team switching to my new deployment tool for old and new projects they created the Deployments sub-team which I led. Tool used Nginx and switched to using LinkerD/Consul for blue-green/canary deploys and service discovery. Tool supported using a data center operating system managed cluster (Kubernetes/Mesos).Deploy team took over the duties of several other tools of the deployment pipeline such as: testing, configuration management, monitoring and alerting, another on-call rotation, and many others.Though split, all original ISE members continue their ISE duties that includes limited amounts of new work, 24/7 on-call rotation, and supporting all legacy ISE duties.
Senior Software Engineer
Led Internal Tools Team(five people) helping other developer teams such as front/back end, console, video streaming, tv applications, payments, QA, security, infrastructure, adtech, and Mobile Engineering teams.Drove adoption through training and embedding on teams for CI/CD(Jenkins), test driven development, migrating to a new microservices architecture from monolithic. Migrated infrastructure owned servers to AWS using Docker. Introduced and supported new build tools(Phing/Maven/Gradle/Ant), dependency management, and several internal customized tools for all of our many diverse teams.
Senior Software Engineer
Led DNA team to adopt many methodologies such as: agile/scrum project management as team scrum master, CI/CD(Jenkins), code coverage tools, test driven development, code review tools, pair programming tools, version control(Git) and technical documentation and specifications. Documented, and taught these processes and tools and processes to all other teams in the form of documentation and training sessions after they were very successful for my team in speeding up development and reducing overhead.Helped team rewrite a slow exponentially scaling DNA processing pipeline into a linearly scaling processing pipeline. Did this using proper software engineering techniques and tools while implementing theoretical and academic scientific algorithms as efficient and scalable Hadoop jobs.
