WHAT I DO- I keynote Foster Care Conferences, train foster and adoptive parents, advise and mentor At Risk Teens and give appreciation speeches to social workers showing them how important they are to the lives of all foster kids.WHY I DO IT- There are over 400,000 children and youth in foster care. These kids need help and guidance to be successful but due to the stressful nature of this work, social workers have a very high turnover rate. I want them to know how much myself and all foster kids appreciate what they do for us. Though they are overworked, just helping one kid can save that kids life. I train foster parents, especially new ones, on how to see foster care from a kids eyes so they get a chance to get a different perspective and learn how to approach the foster kid better. I speak at colleges and universities to students majoring in social work and therapy about the system and my story so they get a feel for what kind of kids they may meet and what they are going to face on the real world. Books are good for studying but they cannot substitute real life experience.At risk teens are teens are about to turn to adults and need guidance from someone who has been through what they have been through, They usually wont listen to anyone else.
