Teaching Assistant
My role consisted of two different areas of responsibility within the Environmental Studies Department (EVS)1. Teaching an Introduction to EVS Lab2. Assisting with lecture courses1. I taught Introduction to EVS Lab for three semesters. I led a class of 15-20 students in lab activities and field experiences. Multimedia technology and data collection tools used by experts in the scientific community helped students become familiar with important environmental issues and field techniques. Using the information taught in lecture and outside research, students became more informed about local and global environmental issues. This hopefully led students to become environmental stewards and supporters of sustainable practices in today's society.I was responsible for creating quizzes, exams, group projects, and other assignments. I attended weekly meetings with other TAs to learn about the following week's lesson. After my first semester, I helped to mentor new Teaching Assistants new to the program. During my final semester, I assisted the lab coordinator in modifying two existing labs to reflect updated techniques and move one of the field trips to Carolina Beach State Park. After passing UNCW's 15 passenger van safety class, I took students on three field trips each semester. We visited the McCrary Park, a Stormwater BMP Demonstration Site to discuss how to best manage stormwater runoff. Our field trip to Carolina Beach State Park helped students to synthesize previous material (population, biodiversity, mapping, soil, and water) and practice assessing the environmental health of one site. We explored the maritime forest, barrier islands, and salt marshes. 2. I assisted with three different lecture courses: Global Environmental Issues, Tropical Environmental Ecology, and Terrestrial Wildlife Field Methods. Duties included: assessing student performance, management of online materials, leading field trips, and leading class lectures and discussions.
