CurrentTorquil studied architecture at Beaux-Arts in Paris and the University ofEdinburgh, where he gained fluency in French over the course of hisstudies.On graduating he joined Denis Laming Architectes, where he workedon Parc du Futuroscope; a French theme park based upon multimedia,cinematic and audio-visual technologies.He then joined Future Systems, guiding their competition for PresidentJacques Chirac’s grand projet, Musée du quai Branly, Paris, France. Hewent on to work on projects including Selfridges, Birmingham, UK.It was at Future Systems that Torquil met Simon Mitchell, with whom heco-founded Sybarite in 2002.Sybarite is the lead architect and designer for SKP, working across allretail categories, food + beverage and in-house brands. Since 2012Torquil has overseen Sybarite’s relationship with SKP. The practice hastaken a holistic approach to the transformation of SKP from a mall to aluxury department store, choosing to focus on SKP’s branding beforedeveloping architecture and interiors.Sybarite worked in collaboration with Gentle Monster to launch the SKP-Sbrand. Sited south of the Beijing flagship, as a futuristic luxuryexperience aimed exclusively at China’s Gen-Z consumers.In 2016 Sybarite was awarded the ‘Queen’s Award for Enterprise andInternational Trade’ and in 2018 Torquil was honoured with the keys toXi’an city at the opening ceremony of SKP Xi’an. Torquil is due to becomea London Export Ambassador for the Department of International Trade(DIT) in 2019.Whatever the project scale, Torquil’s approach to design blurs boundariesbetween the creative disciplines. His designs create empathy for thebrand and the customer.
