The mission of the AmeriCorps Together We Prepare (ATWP) program is to provide vital emergency assistance to communities affected by disaster and increase preparedness in the areas of greatest need before disasters strike by recruiting, training and supporting young adults who will provide integrated community outreach and education through Red Cross service activities focusing on homeland security. All ATWP members work to support the overall mission of the program with an additional defined focus area. Tory was selected to serve as our Youth Services Program Coordinator overseeing a program that covered a four county area. When Tory began his term of service he demonstrated that he responds quickly to new instructions, situations, methods and procedures of a complex non-profit organization. Overall, Tory is eager to enhance his skills and displays a brief learning curve at whatever the task. His creativity, resourcefulness, time management, strategic thinking and ability to see a project through really made his programs distinctive and successful. Not only did Tory develop model youth programs with clearly defined strategic plans, goals and measurable outcomes, he rolled up his sleeves and worked side by side with youth members. Tory developed a program designed to capture the energy and enthusiasm of our area youth, one that is composed of a diverse group of service-minded individuals of various backgrounds, education levels, and life experiences. Based on the success of Tory’s programming the American Red Cross of Greater Grand Rapids has become a leader in the area of youth volunteerism. In addition to working on this chapter’s youth involvement initiative, Tory has been tasked with aiding in the evaluation and restructuring of our overarching volunteer management system. In his position as Youth Services Coordinator, Tory often represents our chapter at various community events; he has extensive experience speaking concisely, eloquently, and persuasively on behalf of one of the nation’s most trusted organizations. Tory is willing to meet every challenge head on and work hard to make the best of every situation he is placed in. He is indispensable as a motivator of others. His presence among a group of discouraged volunteers is often the perfect antidote to group apathy, and his work ethic is what inspired me to be so thorough in my explanations of his abilities.
