Torbjörn Svensson is a PhD student at the School of informatics, University of Skövde, Sweden, active at Sweden Game Lab and a member of the research group GAME (Games Art Media Experience). Torbjörn is currently doing his PhD studies in a research project called Level Up that are aiming at finding ways to use games and game technology to get more young people (16-28) to read and share digital local news. The project is financed by the Ann-Marie and Gustaf Ander Foundation for Media Research. Torbjörns main contribution in the project is to research the possible transfer of models and strategies for engagement from game engagement to news engagement.The dissertation will present suggested ways to use measures that are proven to work well in engaging players of games as measures for engaging readers in local news distribution. Self Determination Theory is found to be a suitable theory for describing ways to satisfy user needs and keep user engaged. The main steps to engage users are to satisfy needs for autonomy, competence/mastery and relatedness, to give users freedom to act, possibility to develop skills and to be connected to and acknowledged by other users.Torbjörn is a Film studies master from Lund University, interested in classic and interactable narratives, storytelling and photography. Besides research he is working with courses for the Game Writing program at the University of Skövde, Sweden.
