I serve as a captain with the Durham (NC) Fire Department with specialties in Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), water rescue and land search as well as truck level supervision of fire suppression and emergency medical services. Additionally, I am currently the special projects manager for the Firefighter Rescue Network, a US 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to empowering emergency responders and survivors. In that role I have assisted in humanitarian missions to eastern Ukraine and have been an advisor for the Ukrainian national USAR team, the Mobile Rescue Center, a heavy rescue team certified by the United Nations International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG). As an MRC advisor, I have assisted in equipping and training their personnel with specialized search and rescue equipment. I am also the developer of the Hi-Flow Sampler (US Patent RE37,403) and the Vent-Bag™ which are US EPA approved methods for measuring methane and natural gas leak rates. I have been the project manager for emission measurements at over 500 oil and natural gas facilities throughout North America (including Arctic oil operations), Europe, Ukraine, and Central Asia. I also conducted air chemistry measurements at the WSU Clean Air Facility during a 14-month assignment at Palmer Station, Antarctica. My philanthropic interests prior to the Firefighter Rescue Network included charitable stair climbs for organizations including the Challenged Athletes Foundation, the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, the American Lung Associations, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. I was lucky enough to be the first firefighter to stair climb the Empire State Building in full turnout gear to support the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
