If you cut me half, you’d find running down the middle, like a stick of Blackpool Rock, the word ‘explore’. This does not mean hiking to the North Pole, it means discovering the world around me and finding spaces to breath, discovering the subtle shifts in the micro seasons each week, turning those foraged fruits into chutney, following my dog down an unknown track and wondering just how that ancient monument is still standing. I have worked in travel and tourism for 36 years, starting in an urban setting in central London, but quickly gravitated towards the then undeveloped (in tourism terms) Southbank, Bankside and the East End where I honed my skills: project management, marketing & comms on a shoe-string, collaboration and partnership working. I moved to the Chilterns 20 years ago and discovered a wonderful but unknown countryside with massive opportunities for business, locals and visitors. I got involved and became a co-founder of the first Tourism Network that was formed to bring together a disparate group from the public and private sectors to work collaboratively to promote the Chiltern Hills. This was my first experience of working with countryside organisations including the AONB, public bodies and interest groups. We collectively wrote the business and comms plan, secured funding, built a website, ran networking and workshops and started new partnership projects. The network is still going, and has 180 local visitor economy providers across four counties and multiple sectors. We are currently supporting a new countryside access and welcome project led by the Chilterns Conservation Board. I have been running my own businesses for 23 years, but that doesn't mean I just work on my own. Far from it! Whilst able to get on and meet deadlines and deliver outputs, I am usually part of a project team made up of different skill-sets or sectors, where my contribution is communications and product development, underpinned with a strong sense of place. It informs everything I do. Over the past 15 years I have worked increasingly in a rural setting for AONB’s, National Trails, Destination Marketing Organisations and with many SME’s who supply into their local visitor economies. I have also worked for regional and national governments abroad supplying market intelligence and strategic communications advice and support.

DirectorMta Tourism Leisure 2000 - PresentWhat are you doing that is different in your business? You can no longer compete with other businesses in your sector based on your product alone. Potential customers can check in on you an instant, everything that everyone else is saying about your business – and they will be less likely to trust you, rather than anybody else in their network. This is a game-changer as traditional and official channels loose their relevance and impact in a fluid marketplace where we can all speak to anyone we like, from anywhere we like.In our selfie-obsessed world, we fail to see anything anymore. So intent are we with rushing around bagging all those top sights to share with our social networks, that we don’t know where we are, who has been there before and perhaps not even why what we are perched on the edge of. Mary’s philosophy is to stop. To sit awhile and to listen. Listen to what the location and people who belong there are saying. Only then can you really craft destination messages. “What are you doing that is different in your business?”Mary has kept her business small, working with clients she knows and respects in England and abroad, who come to her through word of mouth recommendation. A consummate professional and doer, Mary prefers to be on the sharp end, successfully implementing projects and campaigns on time and within budget, that have needed her considerable skills in both an advisory and deployment capacity. When Mary is asked to take on a new project, her approach is always grounded in the end-user and how they can be meaningfully engaged – including B2B and B2C;Current clients: The International Union for Conservation of Nature, Visit Essex, National Trails, Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency South Africa and Chilterns Tourism NetworkRecent clients: Chilterns Conservation Board, United Nations World Tourism Organisation -

DirectorChilterns Tourism Network Jan 2014 - Feb 2021Chinnor, OxfordshireThe Chilterns Tourism Network (CTN) is a group of 270+ Chilterns tourism businesses, all with an interest in collaborating to develop the visitor economy and promote the Chilterns destination brand. We face stiff competition from other well-resourced and established UK destinations, but are confident that with our editorially-led communications approach, will continue to take bite-sized pieces from their elephant-sized combined market share. A broad range of visitor economy interests are represented including; accomodation providers, visitor attractions, theatres, pubs, specialist food providers, museums, tour operators, countryside sites, market towns, local authorities and statutory tourism bodies.
