Grew from simple beginning of "server in basement" environment to private cloud -- a virtualized environment in multiple, geographically separate, redundant data centers utilizing open source software combined with select commercial tools. Heavy use of application and system monitoring to enable a proactive approach to maintenance and problem solving. Deployed NAGIOS for proactive monitoring, Puppet Enterprise for host automation and configuration management and Splunk for log analysis and alerting. Built a DevOps team to provide production and staging environment for enterprise wide applications and services to be scalable and highly available. Established processes for automation, maintenance, security, and quality assurance.Hardware infrastructure based on x86 server hardware (Dell, Fujitsu) interconnected by gigabit (Cisco, Brocade) networking with heavy use of VLAN for network partitioning and security. Hardware load balancers (Brocade) managed application loads among pools of application servers. The network was protected by firewalls (Cisco) and an open source intrusion detection system.CentOS operating system virtualized using KVM hypervisor provided stable virtualized Linux environment with no licensing costs.Legacy applications transactional database used PostgreSQL with SLONY-I for redundancy, availability and improved read scaling. Data warehouse also ran in same model. Next generation applications used MongoDB infrastructure, full use of sharded replicasets for complete fault tolerance.Applications were built on J2SE technologies using service oriented architecture. Applications ran in simple Apache HTTP/Tomcat Application server stack with ActiveMQ/JMS messaging queue.

Prototype incorporated model-view-controller design and was implemented using Apache Struts running on ATG Dynamo application server.

This system allowed data communications to pass through HTTP proxy servers and firewall applications and is ideal as a communications layer for distributed client applications.Designed and implemented an instant messaging system for a business directory application that allowed potential customers to communicate with businesses. The application runs within the context of a web browser and is built upon the aforementioned HTTP tunneling system.Implemented a method for updating web page views in a browser without submitting another HTTP request to the server. This technology allows web pages to continually update their contents as the data that forms the basis of the web page changes. For example, a web page that shows statistical information about the current load of a server would automatically update as the load of that server changes.All development for this client was done using Java technology.

The user interface was composed of a front-end developed in HTML/DHTML and a back-end developed in Java running on ATG Dynamo Application Server. This was an object oriented design effort documented with UML using Select Enterprise software. This application is currently in production and is used by a branded Internet yellow pages web site to bill advertising customers.Developed functional area of an e-commerce solution that allows merchants to view, approve, reject, and fulfill orders placed by customers. The system was implemented using Art Technology Group’s Dynamo Retail Station software. Business logic was implemented using Java Beans and ATG’s proprietary JHTML format (similar to JSP) for accessing beans and their properties.Designed and implemented a functional prototype of the client portion of a three tier sales automation application using Java. The client interfaces with the second tier by serializing Java objects and delivering them via HTTP. This mechanism allows data to pass through firewalls and facilitates data encryption using SSL.
