Somalia

Managing the largest UN country trust fund globally with a capitalization of more than 500 million USD and a portfolio encompassing the full spectrum of the UN’s mandate in Somalia. Responsibilities include defining investment strategy, resource mobilization, relations with host government and UN Member States, and strategic communications.

Mogadishu, Banaadir, Somalia

Headed the UN Peacebuilding Fund in Somalia with a portfolio value of approximately 60 million USD. Duties included providing advice and guidance to implementing UN entities, representing the Peacebuilding Fund’s work in contacts with Somali authorities and donor representatives at the country-level, and leading project development and advice in the field of peacebuilding for the UN in Somalia.

Duties included providing substantive advice to the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, coordinating UN-wide initiatives, strategic planning in support of the UN’s mandate in Somalia, and nurturing close relations with counterparts in the Somali government, the international community, and civil society.

Nairobi County, Kenya

Provided advice to peacebuilding and state-building processes in Somalia for Interpeace, an international peacebuilding organisation headquartered in Geneva. Main responsibilities included programme management and development, donor liaison, and reporting. I covered all parts of Somalia, with extensive travel to Hargeisa, Garowe, and Mogadishu. I had a particular responsibility for Interpeace’s long-running support to local governance, as well as re-establishing Interpeace's engagement in the south and central regions of Somalia through the direct management of a ten-member team and setting up a new office in Mogadishu.

Kenya

Assigned to the Conflict Prevention Programme at Folke Bernadotte Academy, the Swedish government agency for peace, security and development under the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, I managed a trilateral programme in Kenya. In close cooperation with Kenyan and South African partners, the programme provided support to the reconciliation process in Kenya by building a network of civil society actors specialised in conflict prevention and mediation.

Kenya

Reporting, analysis and advice on political and economic developments in Kenya and the region with a particular focus on Kenyan politics, human rights, trade, maritime piracy, security, and regional integration through the East African Community. Actively involved in several high-level visits to Kenya, including at ministerial level. I was the main speechwriter of the ambassador and authored most political reports sent to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Stockholm

Assigned to the Somalia section where I worked with issues related to the Somali peace process and maritime piracy. I also supported the Head of Mission and the Special Envoy to Somalia with the responsibilities related to Sweden’s chairmanship of the European Union.
