Senior Systems EngineerOxford Instruments Mar 2023 - PresentAbingdon, Oxfordshire, GbWorking in the NPI team, I am the lead engineer for the development of a new cryogenic platform, including its control system. This role embraces requirements capture and development (system requirements specifications as per ISO 29148), mechanical and cryogenic design, safety studies (risk assessments as per ISO 12100), validation and verification, and product compliance (IEC 61010-1, EN 61326). I work closely with colleagues in Sustaining Engineering, Production/Operations, Software, and the Applications Team to design safe, supportable and reliable scientific equipment. -
Senior EngineerSiemens Healthineers Aug 2022 - Mar 2023Forchheim, DeWithin the Product Lifecycle Management team, I support the design and development of the cryogenic systems in the next generation of MRI scanners. This includes aspects of mechanical design and cryogenic engineering, cooldown time modelling, and manufacturing support. -
Senior Development Engineer (Nanoscience)Oxford Instruments Mar 2022 - Aug 2022Abingdon, Oxfordshire, GbIn this role, I work within the NanoScience NPI team developing a range of new cryogenic systems. A highlight among these has been supporting the concept design of a very large dilution refrigerator, ProteoxQX, targeting industrial quantum computing. The design concept addresses technical performance, upgradability, reliability, product compliance, and manufacturing methods, to meet the expectations of selected key players in the superconducting qubit market. This design work was undertaken directly with potential customers. -
Development Engineer (Nanoscience)Oxford Instruments Jan 2019 - Mar 2022Abingdon, Oxfordshire, GbWorking in the NPI Team of the NanoScience business unit, I provide the engineering input to support the development of new cryogenic platforms, for industrial and academic research. My role embraces aspects of mechanical design, gas handling system specification, and developing control software requirements. I have played a key role in the successful development of the flagship Proteox product.Key responsibilities include: - Undertaking calculations (hand and simulation) and verification testing to validate component and system designs.- Managing and executing tactical development projects/work packages that deliver technology or process improvements to higher-level systems.- Developing concept designs and documentation which provide full definition of design requirements to the Drawing Office, and reviewing those drawings as part of Product Lifecycle Management.- Participating in design safety analyses (HazOp, DFMEA).- Supporting design reviews looking at design for manufacturing, assembly, and service.- Developing system piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).- Creating and maintaining product user manuals.- Developing system state charts as input to control software development.- Creating and maintaining the technical file for a key product line, and ensuring product EC compliance with Machinery Directive and Low Voltage Directive via EN12100 and EN61010+A1:2019. -
Technologist (Plasma Technology)Oxford Instruments Nov 2017 - Jan 2019Abingdon, Oxfordshire, GbJoined the Technology Team of the Plasma Technology business unit, deploying clean-room experience developed during PhD studies. Gained experience in the operation of a range of plasma etch and deposition tools and thin film characterisation techniques (ellipsometry and reflectometry). Played a leading role in the investigation and development of a low-cost, single-wavelength ellipsometer for measuring the thickness and refractive index of thin films (validated on ALD and ICPCVD tools). Also completed the Oxford Instruments Early Careers Programme. This prestigious, cross-business development programme is a training platform for developing leadership skills. Over 12 months, training was delivered on project management, communication, and networking. The programme culminated in a 3-month project investigating the suitability of machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies for use in Oxford Instruments' products, the results of which I co-presented to the OI Group management board. -
Postdoctoral ResearcherUniversity Of Exeter Sep 2016 - Aug 2017Exeter, Devon, GbPostdoctoral position completed alongside PhD thesis write-up. A key responsibility was the fabrication of graphene nanoribbon arrays on SiO2/Si substrates, overlayed with complimentary split ring resonator structures. Fabrication required the use of several clean room techniques, including: spin coating of photoresist; electron beam lithography and SEM imaging; evaporative metal deposition; reactive ion etching; wet chemistry; wafer dicing; and wire bonding of samples in packages. -
General EngineerQinetiq Jun 2012 - Sep 2012Farnborough, Hampshire, GbSummer student within QinetiQ's Smart Materials group, aiming to produce novel technologies for defensive and commercial applications. Responsibilities included configuring hardware for acoustic testing using National Instruments LabVIEW and Brüel & Kjær PULSE software packages. Technical support on other projects provided when necessary. -
Summer StudentUniversity Of Exeter Jun 2011 - Sep 2011Exeter, Devon, GbSummer student on the University of Exeter's Knowledge Transfer Account (KTA), Arkiris, working in collaboration with QinetiQ to improve the accuracy of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) systems for tracking purposes. Required to quickly become familiar with National Instruments LabVIEW software to fully programme a motorised x-y stage for scanning RF scenes. Also investigated the behaviour of RFID tags in the presence of attenuating materials.
