A long time ago, as a clinical Speech Pathologist, I found my passion early on in Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC). In the days when the most advanced device was the Canon Communicator with it's ticker-tape printed output, I was captivated by the tangible impact of low tech and high tech communication aids. My career has grown alongside the evolution of high-tech Speech Generating Devices (SGDs), moving from basic communicators to today’s sophisticated, touchscreen tablets that enable users to speak, access the internet, and send messages with ease. While many of my colleagues and team may tire of my "history lessons," I am constantly amazed at how far we've come and the range of options available! It’s a privileged position to assist individuals who may not rely on speech alone, on their journey to find the right device which plays such an important role in their lives. In 2016, I collaborated with Talking Mats in Scotland to establish Talking Mats Australia, to expand the availability of training and resources in Australia. Since then, we’ve provided Foundation Training to over 1,000 people and trained around 20 individuals as Licensed Trainers. Talking Mats is a wonderful evidence-based, tool providing a framework for people to think about and communicate effectively about things that matter to them. Today, my role has transitioned from clinical practitioner to business owner, focusing more on strategic support. My passion now lies in empowering my team to carry forward our mission. By ensuring they have the tools, guidance, and support they need, I am confident they will continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our clients. After 30+ years in the business of AAC devices, I believe that while technology changes rapidly, our dedication to personalised solutions remains the cornerstone of each client’s success.
