I graduated in May 2023 from the Mental Health and Addictions Worker program at St Lawrence College. I decided it was time for the next chapter in my life, as I have worked in all aspects of the restaurant industry for many years. My heart belongs working with people as I’m naturally empathetic, nurturing and a great listener. I have experience working at the Cooperative Care Centre helping those who are experiencing mental health challenges , homelessness and addiction. I have learned that many people are seeking someone to show an interest in their life and take the time to listen to what they have to say. By exhibiting kindness, compassion and listening we can learn so much from others and make someone’s day brighter. I have learned that we can’t solve all the challenges people face. But, that the simplest acts of kindness and compassion can encourage clients to build strong bonding trusting relationships with us. Once we gain trust we can take the journey together that focuses on individuality , uncovering inner strengths and developing client centred goals. A client centred approach i have found essential as it focuses on abilities, knowledge and capacities rather deficits or things that are lacking. I love a strength based approach as it allows individuals to see themselves at their best in order to see their own value. I choose to work in the mental health field because it provides opportunities to give others life-changing support.
