I am the Founder and CEO of Biome – Australia’s first online eco store (and greenwashing-free zone). And today, Australia's largest omni-channel eco store.In 2019 and 2020, I was named one of the Top 10 People in E-commerce in Australia.My life’s purpose is creating the change I want to see in the world. This tenet drives everything I do, both in my business and personal life.Growing up in Central Queensland, my love for the environment was fostered by a childhood spent playing in the bush. The lightbulb moment came when I worked in Indonesia in the 1990s and discovered the work of conservationist Dr Biruté Galdikas. After an expedition into the jungle and a life-changing moment looking into the eyes of an orangutan, so vulnerable to the impacts of deforestation for palm oil, I vowed to be part of the solution.In 2003, I launched Australia’s very first online eco store from our family living room. In a time when not only was online shopping an unfamiliar concept, but 'being eco' was out on the fringe, I fought hard to turn my passion into a successful business. Today, we operate six shops in addition to our thriving online store, with a team of 80 people.Back then, a "reusable water bottle" was a new concept. As proof, we held the number one organic position on google for 'water bottle' for 10 years! I forged a path for retail categories such as shampoo bars, reusable coffee cups, Bokashi composting, beeswax wraps, wire pegs, and vegan—backing them before mainstream retailers realised the market for these environmentally-responsible choices.I’m proud of the many firsts we have achieved: * Biome was Australia’s first retailer to become a certified B Corporation.* The first Naked Beauty Bar where customers can make package-free skincare.* First store in the nation to require truth in labelling and that all products be free from palm oil, BPA, PVC, synthetic fragrances & preservatives. * World’s first 100% palm-oil-free retail store.* In 2005, began Australia's first in-store recycling program for 'hard to recycle' items such as mobile phones, printer cartridges and corks!Our customers know we’re committed to our values: we scrutinise every product before it earns a place on our shelves, and stick to the strictest toxin and environmental standards in the nation. We have empowered more than one million customers to transform their worlds and enhance their wellbeing. It’s a constant challenge to balance our business goals with sustainability and social justice, but I believe we’ve stayed true to our purpose for 18 years.
