I helped research and write "best practices" in a collaborative project for News Co/Lab. The results will hopefully provide those who use media evidence-backed methods, and tips on how to implement the practices.
My beat included covering the local public hospital and writing health features. The newspaper sued the hospital for access to information following my formal requests. All this hinged on the fact that a woman died during an operation performed only a few times a year.
Actively pitched health, science and environmental stories, focusing on agricultural and water issues. Wrote medical and hospital profiles for national publications.
Taught reporting and writing on topics including ethanol's impact and Midwest agriculture and the Gulf's Dead Zone.
Organized daily reporters and copy for weekly health and science section.
