Project focus: Arenas and stadia (new & existing), K-12 & higher education uses, large assembly/convention centers, warehouse, and mixed-use highrise buildings throughout the US and in CanadaPerform and manage egress analysis, fire modeling, and code consulting tasks new and existing sports projects. Complete code review and design for compliance with applicable building and fire codes in jurisdictions throughout the United States and internationally. These projects typically involve engineering justification of code alternatives and presentation of these to code officials and appeals boards. Conduct analysis of smoke-protected assembly seating including timed egress analyses and justification of mechanical smoke exhaust system design, natural venting, or smoke-filling approach to smoke control. Coordinate smoke control system testing and evaluation for compliance with codes and design criteria. Review fire protection system criteria and designs for these projects (fire sprinkler, fire pump, fire alarm, etc.). Complete site visits of new and existing buildings for compliance with building and fire code requirements (existing building analysis) as well as installation and testing of fire protection systems (fire sprinkler, fire alarm, etc.).

Project focus: Arena and stadium (new & existing) projects throughout the US and in CanadaManage code consulting, egress analysis and fire modeling services for large assembly design and construction projects. Most of these projects involve smoke-protected assembly seating and include justification of mechanical smoke control system design, natural venting, or smoke filling in order to reduce or eliminate mechanical smoke control. Conduct timed egress analyses and prepare smoke and fire modeling studies using FDS for arenas, stadiums and other large assembly occupancies. Prepare and present code alternatives to building and fire code officials and appeals boards. Use fire protection principles and knowledge of building and fire codes to propose alternative protection methods. Code review and design for compliance with applicable building and fire codes in many different jurisdictions across the United States and in Canada. This includes the use of the International Building Code (IBC), Life Safety Code (LSC), International Fire Code (IFC) and applicable NFPA standards.

Project focus: Federal courthouses and office building projects throughout the Southeast USReview projects for compliance with GSA Facilities Standards for Public Buildings Service (PBS-P100), International Building Code (IBC), Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) and other applicable codes and standards. Where compliance is not practical, work with the design/project team to establish with acceptable alternatives and equivalent protection and properly document these alternate approaches. Oversee construction administration tasks for large fire protection system design and replacement projects, in cooperation with the contracting officer. Includes an active role in pre-bid meetings, bid reviews, projects document review and field inspections. Conduct site visits/surveys and acceptance tests of fire protection systems and features, evaluated for compliance with applicable NFPA standards and owner requirements (PBS-P100). Provide technical fire protection and life safety information to non-technical internal customers - service centers (building management), design and construction staff, leasing/realty staff. Present fire safety training via presentations and training handouts for GSA staff/business lines (leasing, building managers, etc.) Conduct general fire safety presentations for tenant agencies and provide oversight for fire alarm drills and occupant emergency plans in both leased and owned buildings. Established myself as the point of contact for the life safety review of lease projects being done in the Southeast Region 4, to address previous consistency and responsiveness issues. This includes review of lease documents, fire protection reports, design intent drawings, construction drawings and working with leasing staff and the project team to address non code-conforming situations. Conduct site visits of potential lease spaces and witness testing and inspection of completed lease projects before occupancy.

Project focus: High-rise casinos and hotels in the western US and internationally in UAE & Macau

Project focus: Fire protection systems, arena fire alarm replacement, hospitality/resort with atriumsReview and recommend action on code variances submitted by building owners and design professionals. Review all types of fire protection system drawings for compliance with the applicable codes and standards and conduct acceptance tests of those systems. Conduct inspections of existing building for fire code compliance issues. Review building construction plans for compliance with the applicable building and fire codes. Review smoke modeling reports & timed egress studies for large assembly facilities (convention center and stadiums). Prepare local code amendments during the code adoption process and present proposed changes to multiple committees and at public hearings. Work as part of a group of technical staff on new code policies and enforcement criteria. Provide training and technical support for fire department inspectors and plan reviewers.

This program alternated full-time work and school semesters to gain experience in fire protection while completing my engineering education. The position was as an assistant to the Chief Fire Protection Engineer for NAVFAC. Work included involvement in a full-scale high-bay hangar fire testing project conducted with NIST during one of my co-op rotations.
