Questions about how state criminalizing and punishing systems maintains white supremacy in the contemporary United States inform my teaching, research, and service. My research can be divided into two broad areas: the first examines racial disparities in criminal processing and the second examines the impact of putatively race and gender neutral laws. I have published research in more than half a dozen scholarly journals, including Crime & Delinquency, Criminology & Public Policy, Feminist Formations, Justice Quarterly, and Race & Justice. Currently, I am working on a set of co-authored articles with Meggan Lee and Nick Rochin that examine individual and institutional predictors of solitary confinement, thus taking my interest in criminal processing and turning it inward to see how is discipline handled inside the prison. This research is also a meditation on the multiple forms of displacement prisons / solitary creates for marginalized people--mad people, non-citizens, women.My commitment to abolishing prisons and dismantling white supremacy extends beyond my teaching and research to the streets, where I can be found changing trans folks names to help limit some of the excess policing they experience, doing court support or community teach-ins, writing grant applications for community organizations, and at anti-racist, anti-police, and anti-prison protests.Specialties: My research, teaching, and activism all center on an exploration of post civil rights racism, especially as it is articulated through policy and practice of state criminalizing and punishing. In addition to my teaching and research, I have administrative experience with curriculum and program development and spent two years as the Director of Graduate Studies at DePaul.
