About Tracy Droz Tragos

Tracy Droz Tragos is an award-winning filmmaker and mother of two teenagers, drawn to issues involving women, inequality, and rural America. At an early age, Tracy found solace in storytelling, watching Vietnam War movies and making a connection with the father she never knew, a U.S. Navy officer who died in Vietnam when she was a baby.Tracy’s work includes Abortion: Stories Women Tell, the HBO documentary telling intimate stories of unplanned pregnancies, resilience and personal tragedy; Smartest Kids in the World, a documentary about the crisis in U.S. high school education, and BE GOOD, SMILE PRETTY, an Emmy Award-winning documentary about the grief and healing of survivors of the Vietnam War. With RICH HILL, Tracy embedded in the homes of low-income families in rural Missouri to be a fierce witness to the challenges and circumstances of three at-risk teenagers. Among other awards, RICH HILL won the Grand Jury Prize for U.S. Documentary at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Since then, Tracy has continued filming with these Missouri families with a focus on Sarah, whom Tracy met in 2012, who became pregnant at age 15 – and is now a mother of three.Tracy's most recent film in release is PLAN C, the award-winning documentary about a network fighting to expand access to abortion pills throughout the U.S. despite the fall of Roe. PLAN C premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and South by Southwest and is now streaming on Starz.SARAH, a sequel to RICH HILL, is currently in late production and twelve-years in the making, the epic story of a rural American family, exploring generational cycles, isolation, and unequal access to services and support - and celebrating the resiliency and strength of mothers despite all. With the support of the Guggenheim Foundation and Catapult Film Fund, an anticipated 2025 release.Tracy received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University in fiction writing and her MFA in screenwriting from USC, where she is an adjunct professor in documentary film at USC's School of Cinematic Arts.Tracy was a 2021 Sundance Screenwriting and Directing Fellow and a Nimoy Fellow for her narrative film THE MACROBIOTIC STONER.
