About Tracy Hillis

I have over 42 years of experience in research, teaching and curriculum development, data analysis and management, development and implementation of multiple research and community education programs, training and staff development, and public consultation. If I were to make a list of everything I have been responsible for and overseen, in addition to the competencies and skills I have acquired in my roles throughout my career and life, I believe most people would be astonished. What sets me apart is my creativity. I’m excellent at coming up with new ideas and concepts, I am an innovator in my many roles and trust my inner vision and my skills to identify how things fit together. I move my ideas and skills to action and can apply them to any context or role. I can see the things that most people do not and can apply all my skillsets to see through gaps and how they fit into a big picture. I want a position that allows me to continue learning and building my skills. I’m looking for a position in an organization that can see beyond a specific job title and see the value in my overall experience. As well I hope the values match up with what’s important to me – learning, being challenged and enjoying what I do.

I have coached Active Start through Learning to Compete (3 – 18 years) skaters in speed skating. Develop and implement Yearly Training Plans/Programs for all groups. Mentor junior coaches.Coaching Philosophy: I use my background in research and science to develop methods of collecting information, I then analyse the scientific data and convert it into coaching and training programs to help develop the athlete. This analysis process relies heavily on my previous experience and knowledge of sport (as a coach and athlete) and the athlete concerned. By understanding the science, which is the foundation of training, a well-designed training program can be developed that will help an athlete reach their full potential. My coaching process is comprised of three elements:• Planning - developing short and long term training programs to help my athletes achieve their goals • Conducting - delivery of training programs • Evaluating - evaluation of the programs, athlete development and my coaching. This element may result in adjustment to an athlete's training program and my coaching styles. NCCP certified Level 3 coach in speed skating, Fundamentals/Introduction to Competition A/B.Over 20 years of experience coaching: have also coached cross country skiing (jackrabbits to junior competitive), lacrosse, soccer (indoor/outdoor), diving, cycling, athletics, basketball and volleyball.

I believe the research and university degrees have given me a strong foundation and my experiences have deepened my understanding of the concepts we learn. As an animal ecologist, I was interested in animal movement (principally ungulates) with respect to snow conditions and depth. I have supervised students in biomechanical processes including the development of bite force in relation prey specialization in wild canids and across carnivore species as well as modeled caribou movement in varying habitat to landscape changes and snow conditions. When I left the north for Calgary after six years I became more involved in coaching and have become increasingly involved in human biomechanics and the development of the young athlete.
