Profile bio

About Tracy Settleberry

In May of 2016, I graduated from the Ohio State University with a PhD in Human Development and Family Science. As a teacher, I have experience in both the elementary setting as well as in higher education. At Ohio State, I taught child development both online and in the classroom (thousands of students). In addition, my dissertation focused on quality of life for children with autism and their families. My teaching experience is varied and diverse. I began my teaching career as an elementary art teacher in a Title I school in Atlanta, Georgia. Although I believe that art can be taught anywhere and on any budget, I applied for and was awarded grants for advanced materials and field trips in order to complete unique projects and expose my students to the many roles art can play in their lives (e.g., visual literacy). While in Atlanta, I earned multiple teaching awards, and found my interest evolved as I started to focus on children with special needs. Ultimately, this change led me to apply to Ohio State in order to continue studying children with special needs. My research investigates family quality of life for families of children with autism. Research demonstrates that having a child with a disability places greater stress on families (e.g., lack of parental respite care and an above average divorce rate for parents). Taking a systemic approach, by examining the child and the contexts in which the child exists (e.g., school, family, and individual), my research connects important areas of study within the field of autism, and will influence future interventions aimed at improving the overall quality of life for children with autism and their families.Currently, I am a Visiting Assistant Professor at Miami University in the Family Science and Social Work Department (in the School of Education, Health, and Society). This program is rooted in social justice, and always uses best practices and new research to inform curriculum.Throughout my college teaching (Ohio State, University of Cincinnati, and Miami University), I have taught Child Development, Adolescent Development, Adult Development, Family Theory, Diverse Family Systems, Research Methods, Lifespan Development, Introduction to Education, and the Art Education Practicum course (adding up to 70+ courses over the past 8 years with class sizes varying from 8-250 students). It's been quite a ride, but I love what I do!

Listed skills include Teaching, Research, Lesson Planning, Tutoring, and 23 others.
