When I was a kid, I love sports but I realize at a young age, I was not athletic and my hopes and dreams were shattered. Then, I read a story about Bobby Bethard and Charley Casserly, who were Washington's (NFL) General Manager and Assistant General Manager respectively and there, I wanted to be a general manager.I played a lot of fantasy football and fantasy sports as a kid to practice building a team that I wanted. I did win a few championships and I was working upwards to be a General Manager. In my high school years, I read up about the General Manager job and it was not pretty. I know in the real world, your dreams do not match our reality, but for a General Manager job, it is a 24/7 job as you deal with deadlines, agents, and others. Your phone will ring after you sleep. There are no days off.I try to find something similar to being a General Manager in the business world. This led me to my junior year of college when a counselor gave me information about the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM). I read it over and this was the area I wanted to be part of. HR is mostly involved in finding and developing talent and that is what I wanted to do.Since then, I have been in the recruiting/talent acquisition space for nearly sixteen (16) years. I still love being a recruiter because I view myself as a scout for a sports team. I enjoy reading resumes and profiles and see the potential for each profile I review. Over time, I have learned to be analytical and learning new tools to find talent. However, the key to recruiting is connecting and building relationships with the talent you see and see them grow. If they become successful, I have done my job.On the side, I am a Tony Kornheiser Radio Show e-mailer, and a top-six finalist for the Washington Post "Greatest D.C. Sports Fan" contest in 2011, I have a burger named after me, I am known as "Jayson Werth's Real-Live Gnome" at Nationals Park, and I have free lifetime tickets to Celebrate Fairfax. I also can do basic web development and I can create a gif.
