Tushar M. Ranchod, M.D. is a partner at Bay Area Retina Associates. Bay Area Retina Associates is the largest vitreoretinal surgery practice in the East Bay region. BARA is a referral-based practice specializing in medical and surgical problems of the retina and vitreous, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and more. Tushar also founded BroadSpot Imaging Corporation, a venture-backed medical device company that developed a technology platform combining portability, cost-efficiency, and widefield retinal imaging. He led the company initially as CEO and later as Chairman of the Board until the technology was acquired in 2021.Tushar holds patents related to surgical tissue closure, advanced surfaces for surgical instruments, anterior segment imaging of the eye, industrial design and optical design for retinal imaging.Tushar M. Ranchod, M.D. completed his undergraduate studies at Stanford University and medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. He completed his ophthalmology residency training at the University of Pennsylvania's Scheie Eye Institute with a subsequent fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery and Disease at at the prestigious William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.Dr. Ranchod has published research papers and book chapters on a variety of topics. He has worked to develop medical devices since the beginning of his ophthalmology training. Dr. Ranchod has also worked for a variety of startup and early stage companies as both an employee and a consultant over the last two decades.Dr. Ranchod has given talks at both national and international meetings and was awarded the prestigious Ronald G. Michels Fellowship award. He is an Assistant Editor for RETINA, the leading scientific journal in the field of vitreoretinal surgery and disease. He is the Course Director for the annual Business of Retina Meeting held by the American Society of Retina Specialists, focusing on the business and logistics of practicing vitreoretinal surgery.
