My main responsibilities at Power Computers was offering onsite support for our clients. This included server setups/installations, laptop/PC repairs, network administration, disaster management. server support, contract work, exchange, SQL servers and more.Apart from expanding my knowledge base on the technical side of things, what I really learnt in this position was how important client relationships were. Working onsite in people’s offices, I got an understanding of how much an efficient and friendly IT service meant to people – and their business in general. I also discovered I had a knack for being able to explain tech-related stuff to people who weren’t necessarily tech-savvy, and how much they appreciated that I took the time to do so.

Before I started working in the IT industry, I worked as a liaison between our shipping company and the crew who were bringing in goods to the country. This role involved:> Attending vessels berthing/sailing> Reporting to Customs and AQIS> Liaise with international customers> Preparing cargo documents for vessels> Coordinating crew movements on/off vessels> Cash to MasterMy key takeaway from this position was how to effectively communicate with any person on any level. A lot of my time was spent talking to people from different cultures, with all different levels of English skills. It was a great experience for learning how to create relationships with people who are very different from you, not just in knowledge and experience – but their whole way of life. I believe this skill is what helps me every day in business now, being able to decipher IT-speak to anyone who wants to hear it.
