Senior Mechanical EngineerTensentric Nov 2018 - Nov 2019Boulder, Colorado• Rewarding work as part of a small team on an exciting and innovative device designed to enhance the processing of a potentially lifesaving drug.• Designed and made various prototype electro-mechanical mechanisms using stepper motors, and various sensors to power an automated fluidic processing system. Prototyped and tested portions of the various concepts as design elements to quickly prove the design intent or identify needed changes on a nightly turnaround schedule to inform the design direction of teammates. Created prototype 3D printed silicone molds to facilitate testing of fluidic elements on a reduced timeline rather than purchasing machined mold tools, saving time and budget. This facilitated an aggressive 3-day design turn cycle, which was 1-3 days of design, 3 days waiting for parts for a fully functional fluid handling disposable and electro-mechanical test bench.• Created several layers of safety systems intended to protect the user from potentially lethal electrical shock hazards. Systems comprised of mechanical disconnects, passive isolation, electro- mechanical locks, optical, and electrical sensors for the software to detect machine status and prevent interruption of the process.• Designed entire enclosure (mechanical and industrial design) for a machine which was intended to be used in a laboratory environment, conforming to IEC 61010. Enclosure comprised of 4 large plastic pieces, designed to be suitable for several manufacturing techniques. It was intended to be thermoformed, made with a 3D printed master and cast in urethane, or to be 3D printed for end use. This was due to client not knowing desired quantities and ever-changing requirements, with minimal changes. -
Mechanical EngineerCochlear Jul 2017 - Nov 2018Boulder, Colorado• Designed totally implantable cochlear implant microphone for a clinical trial. Collaborated with electrical engineer to create entirely new design utilizing a 5-layer flex circuit to provide electrical shielding for the implant microphone. Responsible for entire mechanical design, PCBA design, layout, assembly method, laser welding, and documentation. Developed improved CNC laser weld program and parameters to optimize titanium microphone diaphragm tension and pressure sensitivity performance.• Process engineer and area owner for an ISO 7 cleanroom, manufacturing hearing implants. Provided engineering support to aid the efficiency of all cleanroom operators. • Created new and revised processes, design and tooling changes to improve yield on existing TUV approved product. Created and released all required documentation, performed required validations to enable release of design change within the quality system.• Trained cleanroom and laser welding operators on new and revised processes including precise delicate assembly techniques requiring manual dexterity as well as the use of automated machinery. • Responsible for all labeling and packaging ECO's for TUV certified product worldwide. Also responsible for providing regulatory with information for submission to notified bodies.• Designed product, mold tools, and interfaced with vendors on injection molded plastic and rubber, silicone RTV, laser cut, and die-cut components. Responsible for design and maintenance of mold tooling and processes of silicone molded implantable components and packaging elements.• Converted manufacturing documentation and processes into a visual information system for training efficiency. Streamlined DHR’s for serialized individual devices or LOTS of components to reduce potential for operator mistakes and yield loss. -
Mechanical DesignerCochlear Oct 2012 - Jul 2017Boulder, Colorado• Primary design of implantable hearing aid wearable external signal processor device, including injection molded housing and electrical component layout, PCBA, and human interface. Collaborated with Electrical engineer, industrial designer, and marketing to incorporate design inputs into a product lasting 16+ years.• Collaborated with a team to design the first fully implantable microphone, including active feedback cancellation. Operated in a competitive/cooperative team structure to explore the variables involved and worked to develop and improve test methodologies and then finally production processes to bring the product through clinical trials and to the market (still on the market 2006-2019+).• Invented and created prototypes of implantable mechanical assemblies to reduce surgical effort and time. Performed FEA analysis to optimize performance and reliability of titanium structures, verified through physical testing and iteration of selected variables. Evaluated designs in the cadaver lab while training surgeons and gathering feedback to improve designs and surgical instructions. -
Mechanical DesignerOtologics Llc Mar 2000 - Oct 2012Boulder, Colorado• Designed a skull mounted fully implantable bone conduction transducer to work with existing hearing implant. Prototyped, assembled, laser welded, and tested the design, while developing new assembly and test fixtures, and creating test methodology for production testing. Invented method useful for selective damping of primary resonance without sacrificing power delivery across multiple frequencies.• Responsible for creation of all documentation from initial design, assembly instructions, validation documentation, manufacturing hand-off, process engineer and operator training, and sustaining engineering.• Created all marketing and surgical illustrations.• Design of machined components and interface with vendors of various metal parts including titanium, aluminum, platinum, gold, and stainless steel. Designed injection molded plastic parts, compression and transfer molded rubber and silicone parts, die-cut plastic and labels, laser cut micro-scale parts, stamped titanium and steel, and 3D printed prototypes.• Performed FEA analysis utilizing ANSYS Multi-Physics or Workbench, primarily using modal analysis and optimization of resonant frequencies of joined titanium assemblies for acoustic performance, and for the comparative performance of variable iterations to guide design to final optimized state.

Student AssistantJila On University Of Colorado Campus Jul 1995 - 1998• Student laboratory assistant for Bose-Einstein Condensation labs of Nobel-Prize winning (Physics 2001) atomic physics lab under Carl Wieman. • Learned to machine including lathe and mill. Machined metal components and prototypes used in laser-based experiments. Fabricated and repaired electronic circuits and components. Created computer graphics including figures, overheads, pictures, and a 3D animation for presentation at worldwide scientific conferences. Created models and animation for Discovery Channel episode featuring the Bose-Einstein Condensate experiment of Carl Wieman and Eric Cornell.
