At Rawlings I am in charge of research and development and continuous improvement of the baseball and softball business unit. Working with our manufacturing facilities and raw material suppliers, I use design of experiments (DOE) and other statistical process control (SPC) techniques such as control charts to identify active main effects and interactions of machine and operator settings which determine in-process and finished goods’ mechanical properties. Upon analysis of the results, I implement strategies to reduce variation of mechanical properties and center the properties at the target of customer specifications.

At Quality Tubing I advised welders how to improve welding processes for coiled tubing manufacturing. I was in charge of writing plasma arc (PAW) and gas tungsten arc (GTAW) welding procedure specifications and welder performance qualifications in accordance with ASME Section IX.As a member of the Product Development team, I investigated feasibility of new welding processes for coiled tubing manufacturing. In order to expedite welder qualification, I reviewed the old requirements of our quality system against the requirements in ASME IX. Based on this I approved a new procedure for qualifying welders in order to reduce time and other resources required.During new product development, I worked with our steel mills to create raw material steel for tube manufacturing. One project that I completed was to approve a new steel mill to make steel for our highest strength grade of coiled tubing. During another project we had $2 million of raw material that was out of specification, but I worked to approve a new thermal processing procedure in order to convert the steel into usable material for tube manufacturing.In order to show that our highest strength grade of coiled tubing is serviceable in sour gas, I outlined a test procedure in accordance with NACE TM0177 and published the results through SPE.For the quality assurance department, I wrote quality documents including specifications and welding procedures. I made accept-or-reject disposition decisions and wrote rework instructions of non-conforming product based upon internal and customer specifications. I also supported QA teams in audits from customers and third party organizations (for ISO 9001 certification).As a metallurgist, I performed root cause failure analysis of coiled tubing to help our customers learn more about what happened when a string developed a pinhole or parted at the well site.

While a student at Colorado School of Mines I performed research in collaboration with Advanced Material Solutions Combustion Cladding. The purpose of the research was to develop exothermic welding flux for forge welding. I mixed powder pellets of varying compositions and performed induction reactions of the pellets. I then used light optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy to analyze the reaction products.

Carlsbad, New Mexico

At Intrepid Potash, I sampled partially processed salt ore from hydrocyclones. At the lab I analyzed the samples in order to track mineral recovery and waste of valuable material into tailings. At the end of the internship I then presented my findings to the engineering department so they could look for areas to improve mineral recovery and minimize waste.
