An additional set of exposure blocks were cast to evaluate the performance of low calcium fly ash with that of the high calcium fly ash exposure blocks since current standards do not allow high calcium fly for usage on mitigating ASR.Construction Materials Research Group, “Laboratory Investigation on Adapting ASTM C1293 to Replicate Field Results of Low Alkali Concrete Mixture Proportions” Nationally, it is well known that the ASTM C1293 test, branded the concrete prism test, doesn’t correlate well to field performance; therefore, research is underway to improve this standard test method. The test method especially misdiagnoses low-alkali concrete systems affected by ASR due to alkali leaching and subsequent suppression of the reaction.Construction Materials Research Group, “Field and Laboratory Evaluations of Physical Sulfate Attack” This study includes indoor testing in an environmental chamber to simulate the cyclical conditions needed to promote physical sulfate attack, as well as, outdoor testing in sodium sulfate ponds. The project goal is to use mixture designs that would not suffer from chemical sulfate attack, in order to, access the mechanisms and most durable mixture proportions for physical sulfate attack.
