RELOCATING TO OTTAWA, ON - May 2024Harm Reduction Outreach Worker and Program Coordinator, living in Clarenville, Newfoundland. I am the co-founder and coordinator of a mobile harm reduction service called the Rural Initiative Outreach Team (RIOT), a project of AIDS Committee Newfoundland & Labrador. In my role, I travel over 1,200km each month delivering safe injection / inhalation supplies, naloxone, drug testing supplies, and harm reduction resources to people who use substances in the Clarenville-Bonavista area. For the last decade, I have worked in various front-line and program coordination roles within the non-profit sector, providing support to individuals who are often overlooked in our community, including: people use substances, people experiencing homelessness or precarious housing, people who are incarcerated or recently released from incarceration, and people living with / at-risk of acquiring Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Expertise includes: substance use; harm reduction; HCV/HIV prevention, treatment and care; opioid poisoning prevention, response and care; and trauma and violence informed care. Special skills, include: presentation delivery, persuasive writing, grant writing, data collection, collaboration, and community engagement. I have a proven reputation for grant writing and program design, development, and implementation. I am passionate about advocacy, harm reduction, drug policy reformation, and evidence-based mental health and addiction support. I believe people with lived/living experience should be front and center in harm reduction work, and be present at all tables where these conversations are occurring. When it comes to engaging with program participants, I always lead with a person-centered approach. I believe that care and support interactions should always be a collaborative process, empowering people as their own experts, while making informed decisions. Fundamentally, I believe that people deserve love, support, compassion and care, regardless of where they are in their journey.
