I am a historian specialized in cultural landscapes and the built environment, especially American vernacular landscapes and architecture. I have a strong background in architectural documentation, and my clients have included everything from individual property-owners to state agencies. My skill set includes producing drawings of historic structures, architectural photography and authoring reports including: property descriptions, historic contexts, and National Register Nominations. The foundation of my experience comes from the built environment itself, and I'm immensely interested in historic preservation as a planning tool towards designing more livable cities and environments.I'm interested in early American craftsmanship, the ways in which individuals create space, and how these spaces compose the landscape. I'm drawn to projects that display gendered spaces, power struggles or represent leisure activities.I have spent significant time studying American vernacular architecture in the Mid-Atlantic region and the Midwest, especially 20th century architecture and Modernism. I also have a breadth of knowledge concerning Spanish Architecture in North America, especially in northern Mexico, the American Southwest and Cuba. And of course, being from the upper-Midwest I have an immense interest in Scandinavian architecture, especially log dwellings, barns and saunas.I love to travel, and I think that the most important education comes from exposure to new environments. When I'm not working, I'm usually in my car, off the interstate system, exploring new locations.
