About Travis S. Becker

I currently serve as the Associate Dean of Students for Leadership and Engagement at UC Santa Cruz. In this position, I sit on the cabinet for the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Success, lead the university's bias response process, co-lead campus protest and free speech response, act as the campus' voter registration lead, advise the undergraduate student government, support the university interfaith council, and oversee two campus units, UCSC's student run radio station, KZSC, as well as SOMeCA (Student Organizations, Student Media, Cultural Arts and Diversity). I currently supervise the Assistant Dean of Students for Leadership and Engagement, as well as the Student Government Operations Coordinator. I previously held the position of Assistant Dean of Students for Strategic Initiatives and Policy Analysis, and prior to taking on roles in the Dean of Students Office, I worked for over half a decade as the Director of the Lionel Cantú Queer Resource Center at UCSC. I am a first generation college graduate and I hold a Master’s degree in Higher Education & Student Affairs from NYU and a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing Communications from California Lutheran University. With 15 years of experience in higher education and student affairs, I possess a wealth of knowledge and experience with initiatives that support student success and community wellness, as well as a deep commitment to furthering equity and social justice. I have made significant campus and systemwide contributions to UCSC and to the University of California, including conceptualizing UCSC's Student Engagement Team for protest response, served as a co-chair for the UCSC Campus Safety Advisory Board for two years, participated on a UC systemwide working group that helped to draft the UC non-discrimination policy, and I was the LGBTQIA+ Directors' Council liaison to the UC Office of the President, where I contributed to efforts that aimed to make the systemwide Title IX training more inclusive regarding gender and sexuality, and consulted for the system on drafting the UC Gender Recognition and Lived Name policy after the passing of SB 179: The California Gender Recognition Act.Prior to working at UCSC, I held positions in Residence Life at the School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center and at the University of San Francisco. I was also a Program Manager for a transitional living program at Larkin Street Youth Services, and served as the Assistant Director for the Intercultural Center at Saint Mary's College of California.
