A strong leader always leads from the front and to do that, you must be able to reflect on where you have been. For the last 21 years, I have embraced a culture in which the most effective leaders are those that master the fundamentals of their trade and apply them to every level of their profession. My observations have shown that achieving a result is well within the means of most people but exceeding a result often takes a little more. Knowing the duties of my subordinates enables me to approach a problem from their perspective. It allows me to understand what they are feeling and use that insight to help them take ownership of their task, taking its significance to the next level. To me, most importantly, knowing the fundamentals ensures that I can lead by example. I will never expect my colleagues to do anything I am not able or prepared to do myself. Much of my life has been spent working in teams, thinking critically, paying attention to detail, adapting to change, and needing to make split second decisions. I will apply these strengths to every challenge I encounter. I will analyze the outcome, determine what worked, and what did not. I will reflect on the entire process, particularly my role in the matter, so that I can use the experience to help shape the next endeavor. The search for self-improvement is a never-ending mission that I take to heart, and I encourage my subordinates, peers, and sometimes seniors, to do the same.
