  • Ericsson Mobile Platforms
    Senior Staff Test Software Developer
Ericsson Mobile Platforms Nov 2004 - Oct 2009
    Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina Area
Developed LabVIEW applications for testing and calibrating phone reference design prototype units as a member of the hardware development team.Designed quick-turn automation software to test development work as RF, baseband, and software teams delivered new elements of functionality for the platform under development.Created Platform Test Tool, a LabVIEW application with a polished, seamless UI for testing phone platforms. The application saw widespread deployment at multiple EMP sites as well as with external customers. Extended the application to support each new platform that EMP developed.Developed lab bench integration SW using a layer of abstraction for each of the instruments, enabling the resulting LabVIEW applications to use test equipment from multiple vendors.Managed the acceptance, delivery, and deployment of a GS-8800 RF design verification system from Agilent. Coordinated the debugging efforts of Ericsson HW and SW teams along with Agilent in troubleshooting the ongoing GS-8800 issues revealed during testing. Wrote programs using VBA for Excel for reporting the large volume of data generated by the system making it the most productive contributor to the HW group's design verification process.Wrote a tool using LabVIEW to perform the predistortion calibration procedure of Ericsson platforms. Created an easy-to-use application with a graphical UI for this mathematically-intensive algorithm, giving engineers clear insight into how the algorithm works. Taking advantage of its ability to give visual insight into the predistortion algorithm, Ericsson also used this tool for customer training and support.
  • Zedek Corp
    Contract Lab Automation Development
    Zedek Corp Jan 2005 - Apr 2005
    Durham, Nc
Developed an automated test system for qualifying gas analyzers according to EPA specifications using LabVIEW and NI FieldPoint. Since actual tests take weeks to perform, I wrote a simulation of the physical processes so that the lab automation application could be tested in accelerated time. This SW is still in use by Zedek nine years later.
  • Silicon Semiconductor
    Test Manager
    Silicon Semiconductor Aug 2001 - Oct 2004
    Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina Area
Wrote LabVIEW applications for testing and characterizing RF PAs, power MOSFETs, and application circuits developed at Silicon Semiconductor. Rapidly created graphical user interfaces for characterizing performance giving the design engineers the testing tools needed in the design cycle. In a very limited budget environment, integrated creative and effective test solutions to maximize existing resources.Integrated test stations using TestStand, LabVIEW, and the company database for performing high-volume testing requiring minimal operator skills. Managed test operators for two years. For the RF engineering development of power amplifiers, created powerful, easy-to-use software to automate the task of characterizing their performance under a large selection of test conditions (single tone, two tone, IS-95, GSM/Edge, WCDMA, etc.). With its attractive UI, this software became a featured element of investor and customer tours. For the power MOSFET development, created a layered software system that was reusable at all levels of testing, including volume testing, data sheet characterization, environmental testing, and quick-turn prototype testing.Performed all functions, including lab SW automation, database, statistical analysis, and automated document generation, to produce datasheets for both RF and power MOSFET products.Created live demonstration applications used to exhibit our RF and power MOSFET products on the road at the MTT Microwave Symposium in Seattle and the Intel Technical Symposium. Each application had an eye-catching user interface to engage potential customers while the laboratory-quality software I developed measured calibrated results under the surface. Both demonstration applications ran flawlessly.
  • Ericsson
    Senior Staff Test Development Engineer
    Ericsson Oct 1995 - Aug 2001
    Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina Area
Wrote software for testing and calibrating base station radio heads as a member of the development team, initially for the Base Station group and then DWOS (Mobile Advantage Wireless Office). As RF, logic, and software teams delivered new elements of functionality to the project under development, I ensured that the engineers in the lab had automated test systems to perform parametric testing and calibration allowing them to focus on their areas of responsibility. Wrote software used in factory production for testing and calibrating RF transceivers. Designed and created a flexible software platform for testing and calibrating TDMA base station modules using LabVIEW development system. Four years later, this software was still seeing increased use in both development labs and the factory.Wrote software to automatically characterize RF PA packages enabling designers to make a component choice for the Wireless Office radio head.Wrote software to characterize radio head transmitters and analyzed results to pick optimal operating conditions. Further characterized transmitter settle time over its operating domain and optimized test and calibration software to minimize settle time delays.Integrated and wrote software for mobile test stations used for debugging system-level RF issues for Wireless Office and for characterizing RF environments at installation sites.Created a simulation model of Wireless Office system CPU load that was used to predict the performance limits of the system.
  • National Academy Of Sciences, National Research Council
    Research Fellow
National Academy Of Sciences, National Research Council Mar 1994 - Sep 1995
    Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina Area
Awarded an NRC Research Associateship through the Army Research Office (laboratory located at Duke University) to study collisional processes in small polyatomic molecules. Designed and built an experimental apparatus for performing time-resolved, double-resonance spectroscopic measurements over a wide range of temperatures. Integrated the experimental system using LabVIEW.
  • Delphax Systems
    Research Scientist
    Delphax Systems Jun 1987 - Jul 1988
    Randolph, Ma
Collaborated with staff in the R&D Laboratories of this computer printer manufacturer. Designed, built, and automated the company’s primary print cartridge R&D test system.Discovered that contrary to Delphax’s and other companies’ patents, electrons rather than ions are usually the primary source of the latent image charge. This gave the company a strategic competitive advantage and as a direct result of my work, Delphax changed the name of its printing technology from the misleading name, Ionographic Printing, to the correct one, Electron Beam Imaging.
