Analyzed the hydrodynamics of the novel Walvisstaart style flapping foil design (http://walvisstaart.nl/ and http://traviswhitfield.wordpress.com/cfd-portfolio/). Used the Fluent CFD software to create a 2d model of the system, and then used the model to help optimize the design for maximum propulsive efficiency and thrust.Optimized the motion of the blades for maximum efficiency, achieving a final propulsive efficiency 10% higher than our initial design.Wrote perl scripts to expedite analysis process, decreased average simulation set up time from several hours to just a few minutes.Created user friendly tool to automate the user-Fluent interface so that someone without CFD experience can set up a simulation in a few minutes.
