Friends Of The High Line

Manhattan, Nyc

• My wife and I had a great opportunity to help with the maintenance of the High Line, designed by Piet Oudolf. Much of my time was spent doing self observations of the design and the usage of the High Line. There was work involved though, such as big teams of us hand shoveling and cracking ice with shovels so the Line could continue to be open during the winter. We could not use melting salts, because of the planting plan. This opened my eyes to the amount of work needed in any great design. It also gave me great skills in problem solving with groups.

Roof Top Garden/ Terrace Design

J.Galle Landscapes: Artistry & Design

Manhattan, New York

• Here I worked on privately owned roof top gardens. My self-motivation pushed me into finding solutions for problems such as: plants falling over in wind storms, roots attaching themselves through the paving, and deciding what plants should stay or go. Working on such a small scale I really needed to be clean and organized. Always putting down drop cloths before the job was a must, because we were guests in other people’s homes. I learned many of the native New York plants, and gained construction skills by having hands on experience.

Jul 2012 - Jan 2013

Research Assistant

Storm Water Research Lab

Logan Utah

• I was to collect water samples during a rain event. The samples were collected from input and output points in parking lots that had designed bio-swales. During every event a site analysis was taken. These samples were then brought to the Utah State University’s water quality lab. There they were inventoried and sampled for heavy metals and toxins. The basis for this is to determine what native plantings filter out toxins.• Later the professor that I was working for was granted an area where construction of chambers filled with specific plantings would receive the storm water runoff from a larger residential/ commercial area. This made sampling easier and more specific. In addition to the previous tests, the plants were collected, dried and tested. I continued to help with this research as well as part of the construction of the site.
