At Fred Hutch Cancer Center I coordinate, oversee, and manage research studies focused on testing the utility of clinical tools and interventions. My clinical duties include conducting appointments with patients, coordinating with clinic staff on study projects, gathering study data from participants through surveys and interviews, field-testing interventional tools, and overseeing the completion of study procedures. My coordination work includes representing our team during presentations and project meetings, coordinating research study projects with consortium staff at FHCC and UW Medicine, utilizing database systems to maintain study records, processing qualitative and quantitative data for publication, contributing to IRB submissions and modifications, assisting with the publication process, and connecting with potential research partners to increase patient access to research.

As a Clinical Research Assistant I worked on the clinical staff for the global TEDDY and regional CASCADE studies focused on diabetes epidemiology in youth. Our studies sought to identify the genetic and environmental determinants of antibody development that could increase risk of Type-1 diabetes (T1D) and celiac disease incidence in newborns, children, and young adults. I was responsible for leading clinical visits for both the TEDDY and CASCADE study. These visits included conducting study interviews as well as gathering biological samples from participants via a blood draw. Interviews were coded and processed according to study guidelines and I assisted the lab team in processing the samples on the bench. My bench duties included processing the samples and completing PBMC procedures. Our team worked collaboratively with research staff sites in the EU on the TEDDY study. This study is a long-term observational study focused on children and families to identify individuals with genetic risk of developing diabetes, celiac disease, and thyroid disease, assess a participants disease progression, and conduct a follow-up trial over 15 years to track changes in anti-body development in relation to environmental triggers (disease, bacteria, etc.). I coordinated and lead CASCADE study projects with the New Born Screening program based at the Washington State Department of Health to screen newborns and their parents for diabetes risk as part of a pilot-project to hopefully include diabetes screening to the Newborn Screening program. As part of the consenting phase of the CASCADE study I met with 2,000 families over a year and a half period in the maternity ward of Evergreen Health in Kirkland, WA.

In this position I was responsible for leading a classroom of 14 students. This included creating natural science curriculum and maintaining classroom records.

Used on-site measurements and data collection tools to determine the application of appropriate intervention measures to assess and clear crossings for fish passage focused on salmon habitat restoration. This work included data collection in the field, the use of GIS tools to map sites, data analysis, and the use of database tools to centralize and catalog data.

As a Research Assistant I worked alongside Dr. Joan Davenport from Washington State University to assist in the process of experimental study design, set up experiments in the field to test potential interventions to disease, and gather field data on the impact of these methods on bacterial disease in vineyard crops. This work included the use of GIS tools to map and locate potential sites and lab analysis of plant tissue and soil samples.

I helped coordinate research opportunities for students on the WSU Eggert Family Organic Farm by partnering with faculty in the Agricultural and Natural Resources department. This helped create an outdoor lab space for students to have the opportunity to assist with research and gain hands on experience in the field.
