Phd Student - Language And Communication
My doctoral research examined the ways in speakers of English signal that they have trouble hearing, understanding or accepting what another has said. The principal finding is that these actions, so called "other-initiations of repair", regularly offer quite detailed diagnosis of the trouble at hand. Through aspects of their lexico-syntatctic, cohesive and--especially--prosodic design they provide clues about what is causing the trouble (a particular word, reference, etc.) and how it could be fixed. This work thus highlights the fundamental role played by recipients in the resolution of communicative problems. My dissertation is available for download here http://dissertations.ub.rug.nl/faculties/arts/2013/t.m.benjamin/?pLanguage=enDuring my time in Groningen, I was also heavily involved in a course in the international research MA in Linguistics. The course, entitled “Discourse and Pragmatics”, focused on developing students’ practical skills in analyzing how linguistic resources are used to organize spoken interactions and written texts. I played an active role in all aspects of module design, instruction and assessment for three years.
