It was a career-long goal for my co-founder, Brett Ausmeier and me to open our own business. In 2019 we founded Decode Development with the goal of collaborating with our clients and specialist partners to craft quality software for our clients. We apply our passion for quality software systems with our passion for making an impact in the world, collaborating with clients in impact industries such as education and health.Since then we have delivered a dozen projects, many together with our partner Sea Monster Entertainment, who build impact games that drive business goals and social outcomes.Our motivation was born through the experience of taking over the responsibility of systems that were not meeting the expectations of our past employer's clients. On more than one occasion, over a cup of coffee, we discussed how much better these projects could have been if we had been involved from the start. This was a great experience as it taught us the value of a diligently designed system and software development life cycle (SDLC), which we now strive to design and build for our clients.

In my second year at Jembi, my role shifted back to that of an active developer, where I was the lead developer for a medical insurer client. Our team at Jembi was responsible for the support and development of the organisation's Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Personal Health Record (PHR). These systems were originally developed by two other organisations but Jembi took ownership from the end of 2016.The EHR serves as a key integration point with the third party Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Health Risk Assessment (HRA) systems among others. The integration is facilitated through a combination of HTTP endpoints as well as AMQP queues using an agreed message specification based on Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR).The project for the beginning of 2018 was to rewrite the integration with Validic (Activity and Health Device Integration Service). This took the form of an independent service which exposed REST endpoints for user registration, authenticated with JSON Web Tokens as well as the consumption of the Server-Sent Event (SSE) data stream. The data events were immediately written to an AMQP queue to handle differences in the rates of event production and consumption. On the consumer side, the events were transformed into FHIR resources and posted to the EHR. The service was thoroughly automatically tested with a combination of unit and integration tests (+- 80% ) coverage with each.

I joined Jembi to support scaling the development team.. During my first year, the technology team more than doubled in size from 10 to over 20. I spent my time:● Recruiting software engineers and supporting the recruitment of other roles such as designers and business analysts.● Facilitating existing and new teams through the challenges that growth presents.● Coaching and mentoring software engineers and colleagues.

In addition to the opportunities that being a software developer at BSG provided, the team lead role enabled me to explore:● Team management and leadership. ● Training and coaching of graduate and experienced developers who joined the team, to accelerate their journey to seasoned team members. ● Performance management and mentorship of junior developers.● Recruitment of graduate and experienced developers including interviewing as well sourcing on occasion.

Being a software developer and member of the MyWorkLife product team has allowed me the opportunity to learn and grow both professionally and personally. I've had the chance to: ● Start out my career in a awesome team of passionate colleauges.● Be introduced to Linux (Ubuntu) and a Java development environment (IntelliJ).● Understand the impact of my work and gain an insight into the user by manning the service desk and tackling bugs and support requests.● Really get my hands dirty with object orientation and design patterns as well as web application architecture through refactoring of legacy code and new feature development.● Discover application frameworks such as GWT, Spring and Hibernate and challenges of integrating them.● Practice peer code review on a daily basis through our review first, code later policy.● Take the next step in the team's agile journey, by adopting Test Driven Development and Behaviour Driven Development.● Explore NoSQL databases through the use MongoDB while furthering my understanding of relational databases through the use of MySQL.● Get involved with recruitment by interacting with university students at guest lectures and industry visits.● Adopt New Relic, Ansible and Docker to monitor our servers and applications, automate and speed up our server provisioning as well as containerize our applications and services to speed up and reduce errors in our deployment process.The above experiences, as well as the passionate people I have had the pleasure of working with, have moulded me into a confident and passionate developer.

During my time as a Sub-Warden of Calata House, I attended house and hall meetings as well assisted/supported the warden with the daily running and management of the residence including but not limited to:● Administration● Student Well-being

During my time as a tutor in the Computer Science and Information Systems departments, I mentored Computer Science I and Literacy as well as Information Systems II students during their practical sessions and marked their assignments.

The Head Student is the elected representative of the students on the house committee. During my time as Head Student I managed the house committee of the residence including but not limited to: facilitating house meetings, attending hall meetings, organising house/hall events, ordering jerseys for the residents as well as liaising with the warden on any student related issues arising within the residence.
