For a period of 10 years I served in a volunteer role as Chair of the Board of Directors for PM4NGOs.In this capacity I led the strategic direction of the organization, and oversaw the development of all initiatives. I joined Soltis & Company (a boutique landscape design & construction firm) as Senior Project Manager, tasked with recovering a struggling construction division. In this role I was responsible for all aspects of construction, including client relations, operations, field assets, equipment, procurement, budgeting, contract negotiation, billing, bid review, and profitability.Following a successful reboot of the construction division I was asked to take over the maintenance division, with the same goals. These roles found me responsible for 40+ construction projects and 100+ maintenance contracts across Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties.

Earthscapes, Inc. is the landscape & site development division of HaydonBC, a large Public Works General Contractor in Phoenix, AZ. I was hired as Director of Operations and tasked with bringing the Division to a profitable status (following 2 years of losses). In this role I held full authority/responsibility for all aspects of the company, including business development, estimating, field operations, procurement, safety, human resources, accounting & payroll, and equipment/labor utilization. During my tenure with Earthscapes, I guided the Division to a profitable status within 7 months, brought all existing 'troubled' projects back to "on schedule" status, and established proper estimating techniques and project control processes.When asked by the President of HaydonBC if Earthscapes was now "running like v2.0", one of the Project Mangers replied "No, now it's like Earthscapes v3.0".

I was originally hired for the Orange County Division, where I was responsible for all aspects of construction management for projects located in and around Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Notable projects include Casino Morongo, which included $2mm of landscape material and $1mm of concrete pavers, and Silver Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert, an Arnold Palmer-designed golf course (yes, I met him). After three years in the Orange County Division, I relocated to the Phoenix, Arizona Division where I held the position of Senior Project Manager. In this role I had overall responsibility (oversight) for all Division projects (40+), and direct responsibility for 20-25 concurrent projects. This role quickly transformed into one of acting Operations Manager, where I was responsible for all aspects of the Division, including project success, P&L, Division forecasts and projections, cross-functional coordination with Estimating, Purchasing, Field, and Business Development departments, and resource allocation/crew utilization, as well as conducting all Division staff/status meetings.Notable projects include Tempe Center for the Arts, Phoenix Art Museum Sculpture Garden, and Tempe Marketplace. Highlights include:- Led Division to 100% revenue increase in one year.- Led Division to first $1MM billing month.- Led Division to first $2MM billing month.- Coordinated with another (out-of-state) Division to utilize their excess labor for 4 months to avoid layoffs.

I joined Coast Landscape as an Estimator, where I was involved in plan review, performing quantity take-offs, price solicitation, and bid preparation for landscape, irrigation, and site development projects throughout Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties. Shortly thereafter I was promoted to Purchasing Director where I was responsible for all purchasing decisions including all material purchasing and buy-out, subcontractor identification and vetting, bid review and spreading, supply chain management, invoice review and approval, and contract negotiation and enforcement. This position included some project management and coordination aspects as well. While at Coast I was involved in a number of high profile projects, including the 1996 Men's World Cup Soccer Practice Facility, and the Orange County/John Wayne Airport expansion ($2MM+).

Originally hired as a Draftsperson, I quickly progressed to Job Captain, and then ultimately Assistant Project Manager. In this capacity I worked with several firm Senior Associates and Project Managers, preparing and coordinating the overall development of construction document packages for multiple award-winning landscape architecture projects. This included conceptual design and final drafting of irrigation, landscape and hardscape plans, as well as creating and drafting design elements and construction 'details'.During this time I learned how a successful design firm operates, how to interact with clients and contractors, and how to work with and navigate multiple governmental agencies throughout California (building codes, permits, approvals, inspections, etc.). This experience gave me an in-depth understanding of the concept/design process, and what it takes to bring an idea to reality. Equally important, it taught me how to read and interpret building plans from the design side - to see the 'intent' behind the plans.
