As a business partner supporting the Well Delivery and Reservoir Management execution teams my responsibilities included tracking and reporting capital forecasts and expenditure, monitoring spending against approved budgets, conducting variance analysis, identifying risks and opportunities and ensuring capital spending aligned with corporate governance conditions.• I contributed to the successful roll-out of the newly formed FP&A team and associated business partner role by facilitating change through redefining and re-establishing professional relationships to meet the requirements of the new organization, defining roles and responsibilities, setting boundaries, updating lines of communication and establishing new meeting and reporting requirements.• Through collaboration with functional execution teams and other FP&A business partners I created a common cost breakdown structure for sustaining well program estimates across all oil sands assets and then subsequently enhanced the estimate collection template to improve accuracy and enable quicker updates.• By redesigning work process and report templates I was able to reduce time to generate monthly cost reports from 2-3 days to under 1 day, and increase the reporting accuracy.• During a period of short term upheaval due to quick commodity price changes I drafted and issued authorized forecast memos in order to provide up to the minute instructions to the execution teams on what work was to be included in their monthly forecasts.• Along with other FP&A team members I coordinated the creation of the annual capital budget and three year business plan – this included ensuring that work plans were accurate and up-to-date and ensuring budget requests aligned with said work plans.• I participated in the requirements definition, system testing and validation, and end user implementation of a change from an Excel spreadsheet based capital forecasting and reporting tool to an Oracle Hyperion based one.

In this role I had three main areas of focus:1) the project approval request (PAR) process – this included the drafting, review and submission of project business proposals, ongoing monitoring of PAR spending, preparation of plan revisions and creation of lookback presentations. I prepared and issued over 100 PAR documents and presentations, became the go-to person for the PAR process and frequently provided input to the corporate strategic planning group on PAR related issues.2) the capital budgeting/expenditure process – I coordinated development of the annual capital budget, ensured approvals were in place for all capital expenditures, collected forecasts and prepared monthly cost reports, performed variance analysis and identified risks and opportunities.3) the preparation of both planned and ad-hoc asset level communications – in preparing all the varied types of communication (e.g. input into quarterly report summaries, reviewing news release drafts, submissions to stakeholder groups, creating content for town hall presentations and responding to partner requests) I became skilled in ensuring consistent messaging, and through this work and the PAR creation work I developed expertise in drafting accurate and concise written communications.• I coordinated the preparation of the approval request of a $3.5bn plant expansion (largest capital project in the company’s history). This included working closely with the project execution team, the corporate planning group and the partnership office. I compiled information, drafted the approval request document and presentation, oversaw the review and revision process, and ensured partnership requirements were met.• As the planning team expanded to meet the needs of a growing asset I trained and mentored new employees. I also created and presented training materials to educate asset team members on how the project approval request, authorization for expenditure (AFE) and annual budget processes all fit together.
