Was I always drawn to healthcare, or was it that healthcare was drawn to me? That’s my personal “chicken or the egg” question. My childhood memories are peppered with hospital stays or trips to the emergency room; definitely less than some, but likely more than most normally active, rambunctious children: spending Thanksgiving Day at the hospital for a respiratory ailment, an emergency appendectomy that kept me hospitalized until Christmas Eve, losing most of a football season to a fractured arm, missing nearly all of a baseball season to a broken collarbone, to name some of the headliners. Two common threads weave their way through these hospital stays and Emergency Room visits. One is the miracle of recovery. I got better, returning to full strength and full participation in activities I enjoyed. The second is nearly equal in importance: positive and nurturing experiences. My caregivers always made me feel as though I was their most important patient.Personal results and experience are the two factors driving my passion for healthcare. While I may never ascertain the answer to my original question, I do know that one of my life’s great purposes is to help bring comfort and recovery to others during the times when they need it the most. Not every ailment has an effective treatment, but I believe that effective and timely healthcare can assuage a great majority of our physical ills, sending patients on their way without long-term impacts or negative implications. I also believe that every patient deserves to feel just as I did – that he or she is the caregiver’s most important patient. I am determined to be a part of this modern miracle.Such a personal approach to healthcare has always been important to me, but with increased age and perspective, I also recognize that the vast scope of healthcare reaches far beyond the individual. Healthcare impacts the community, the nation, and the world.
