AGF is a new healthcare related nonprofit based in Charlotte NC that has 3 primary program areas. 1) HIV/AIDS care for the un/underinsured. AGF partners with Ballantyne Family Medicine (BallantyneFamilyMedicine.com) at 2 locations in Charlotte to provide healthcare to uninsured/underinsured individuals in the Greater Charlotte Region who are living with HIV/AIDS. This is accomplished through grants from The Ryan White Program which is administered locally by the Mecklenburg County Health Department on behalf of US Department of Health and Human Services' (DHHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Mecklenburg County administers the Ryan White Program for the "Charlotte Transitional Grant Area" (TGA) which includes 5 NC Counties (Anson, Cabarrus, Gaston, Mecklenburg, Union), and York County in SC.2) Pharmacogenetics Center of Excellence (PGxCE.org). The PGxCE is a result of local pharmacy owner and Pharmacist of the Year, Amina Abubakar, PharmD, and her Director of Pharmacy Services Olivia Santoso Bentley, PharmD. Drs. Abubakar and Bentleyhe Obama Administrations' Precision Medicine Initiative and seeks to educate and increase the role of pharmacists in the use of DNA/Genetic Testing to dramatically improve prescribers ability to determine appropriate medications and the efficacy of medications based on an individual's genetic ability, or not, to effectively use a particular medication. Some commonly prescribed drugs simply won't work for some people and currently only through trial and error can this be determined. Pharmacogenetics can determine immediately if many drugs will work for an individual or not, eliminating trial and error and potentially life-saving time. Another example of the value of pharmacogenetics is the ability of prescribers to determine, in advance, the most appropriate dosage of particular drugs such as opioids. 3) To be continued...
