Working at 540 is now the type of job where I feel I can have the MOST impact directly for an array of government customers. As a technology consultant, I'm drawing on my past lives as a software engineer, a solutions architect, director of a technology team, and even a sales engineer to operate effectively in a series of large cross-functional teams.Do I still bring the energy? YES. Do I still bring the expertise in APIs, Data, and emerging technologies? YES. Do I still drink my fair share of 5-hour energies? YES. It's about engaging... it's about diving deep... it's about solving the tough problems. If there's one thing that I've realized during my career, it's that there are more people needed to work on the tough problems.My goal is to work on those tough problems. HELP the government with their digital strategies and transformations. ADVISE the government on data exposure and consumption techniques.... data storage... data science... big data... DATA... DATA... DATA. IMPLEMENT solutions utilizing emerging technologies and get them through IA processes (even helping affect change in those various processes to accommodate a changing technical world).

We take an iterative approach to software development (I know... sometimes Waterfall makes more sense... in those cases we do take this approach) because we embrace changing requirements and insist on working closely with our customers (you'd be amazed how rare that is).Software Developers ARE the rockstars of the 21st century. After working for a government contractor that felt like a Silicon Valley Startup operating in DC, I decided to move on to an actual Silicon Valley startup, Apigee, that is helping businesses and government agencies transform their businesses into the digital world. What am I talking about? APIs!My current position of Federal Solutions Architect allows me to walk into a room full of great business minds and/or technology minds alike, and help solve really tough problems surrounding data exposure (APIs), API Platform Adoption (Developer On-boarding), API Monetization, Highly scalable solutions (both API and BAAS), Data Security, Business Analytics, and much more.What's so revolutionary? MOBILE IS CHANGING EVERYTHING! We thought the internet was a boom (well... it was), but Mobile is an even bigger technological innovation that companies are rushing to catch up to. And what powers mobile? APIs!!! Nobody wants to be the next Blockbuster... trying to solve today's problems with yesterday's technologies (and getting trounced by Netflix in the meantime). Experts predict there are 1 Billion web pages... but they are projecting 1 Trillion mobile devices by 2015. It's now or never!So, what do I get to do at Apigee? I get to talk about architectures that these companies are currently in the process of implementing and deploying. I help show where Apigee fits into the architecture... more importantly, how Apigee HELPS. We start putting check marks next to certain items in the SOO or RFP or Requirements Doc... we draw a few more boxes in the architecture... cross some things out... connect the dots... and viola! But this is where the fun begins because then we start to build a PoC using our platform. This usually involves taking a use case or 2 and going through developing an end-to-end solution (up to and including a mobile app).... AND FAST!!!

My responsibilities for running the technology practice include managing and delivering a variety of technology projects (ranging from data capture/organization, web/mobile development, API development, BI, etc) to our federal and commercial clients (DoD, DPAP, ARA, etc).I have a theory that injecting pure ENERGY into a team increases productivity, and I've used that founding principle to build a team of quality engineers and leaders capable of delivering large-scale projects with a very LEAN structure to the customers' overwhelming satisfaction.During my tenure of leading the technology group and leading specific project initiatives, I've often focused on showing the art of the possible leveraging emerging technologies and more mainstream processes (Yes to Agile... No to Waterfall unless needed) even when it gets the clients out of their comfort zone. Let's face it, customers tend to forget about how we got "there"... especially when we get "there" so quickly and they're getting a pat on the back.As the director, I continued to lead the Procurement Document APIs effort (Procurement BI program) and contribute to that team as a tech lead. There were a couple of new responsibilities that I took on; however, including day-to-day management of the technology practice (leading ~15 employees/subs), budgeting for the tech team, delivering HGS technology presentations to potential partners, business development tasks, RFI/Q/P response authoring, tech team budgeting, employee evaluations, and more.It was a GREAT experience to be able to be a part of a team that was so dedicated to producing quality results... on very tight timelines. We had a team of rockstars at HGS! They made my job much, much easier!

After my tenure at EchoStar, I found a new team that was working on delivering awesome cutting-edge solutions to the Federal government (more specifically, DoD - Department of Defense). I was attracted by the high energy dynamic of the team and my boss. Dare I say it felt like Silicon Valley in the world of federal government contracting. Pretty awesome!It wasn't just about the team though... it was about GETTING STUFF DONE! I was a founding member of the development team (web front-end, APIs, etc) for Clause Logic Service. Clause Logic Service is a single, centralized, authoritative repository for clause recommendations during the procurement process for DoD (though GSA and others are quite interested in utilizing what we produced and are in the process of integrating). We also created a number of RESTful APIs for consumption by integrating 3rd-party contract writing systems. This project was a great success for our customers... (happy customers make me happy)... and a memo was issued by the director of DPAP to ensure all DoD CWS' must integrate with Clause Logic! After working on Clause Logic for a year, I moved over to lead a team to develop the Procurement Document APIs for exposing valuable, reusable procurement data for a number of key operational initiatives (contract indexing, contract reconciliation, financing, contract closeout, etc). These APIs were build off of a data warehouse (used for the traditional BI efforts) orchestrating several data sources into usable consumable resources.I learned a great deal during this stint of my career about the value of energy, leadership, customer involvement, and doing whatever it takes to make the customer happy. In March 2013, I was promoted to the Director of Technology Services for HGS.
