This positions was a newly created social work position within the EAL Service of Department of Education Tasmania. The duties within the role consisted of supporting families and students with refugee and migrant backgrounds and providing referrals to social services via. networking. I worked to provide PL learning for teaching staff in wellbeing and child safety, identifying gaps in social programs run in school for EAL students and facilitation of Drumbeat therapeutic groups to schools.

Worked a cross a variety of public schools, providing support to students (K-12) and staff in primary schools, a regional district school, an Independent Learning School (Big Picture) and a Disability Support School. -I provided school counselling to support wellbeing and social, emotional support to students, parents/ carers.-Facilitation of group work, including DrumBeat groups. -Mandatory Reporting of family violence, abuse, neglect and safety concerns for children. -Regular Well-Being meetings and school staff and leadership teams.-Involvement in Care team Meetings for complex cases. -Undertaking regular professional learning in trauma, including; play therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), DrumBeat facilitation.

Risdon Prison Complex

This final year Social Work placement involved observations and development of practic skills in the areas of Integrated Offender Management. Duties included : building cooperative working relationships with both staff, correctional officers and the clients/ inmates. Co-facilitating cognitive behavioural therapy groups (CBT), observing case management processes, drug and alcohol assessments and training in Domestic Violence Alert, Desistence and observing through-care project management. Key Responsibilities -Creating and facilitating weekly art therapy workshops for clients residing in the live-in rehabilitation unit ‘Apsley’. Providing regular art therapy activities in a 1:1 capacity with an inmates experiencing permanent disability and impacted by mental health factors. Co-facilitating the ‘Equips Foundation’, a CBT program run with a group of 10 female inmates over 10 weeks. Developing strong rapport, providing support and assisting in the completion of their course -work.Shadowing/ observing and working towards practice of the LS/CMI case management and assessments procedures and observing Drug and Alcohol assessments and counselling.

This social work placement offered me a home base to practice regular client communication in the post-separation Child Contact Service. I also observed social workers in the Early Intervention and Partners In Recovery service, shadowed in-depth case-planning, wrote observation notes, assessments, interviewed clients and attended regular training with external agencies and networking opportunities.Key Responsibilities -Attending regular supervision and external service training in Mental Health/ Child Services/ Data.Administration: preparing & up keeping client files, conducting phone in-takes and interviews. Counselling session observations with ‘Effective Seperate Parenting’ Specialist Steve KayPractising regular conflict management and resolution communication skills while assisting in supervision of involuntary child-parent visitations and children change- overs.

My role included working independently to provide students with general support with education barriers, which involved a high level of decision making, planning and reporting and case planning. This position begun with a focus on supporting Single & Teen Parents studying at TAFE, initiating regular contact with these students, interviewing over the phone and face to face and referring them to appropriate internal and external services. This program broadened the student support to include any TAFE student experiencing barriers or issues effecting their education. Work duties involved regular report writing and team presentations on the local issues affecting students, TAFE classroom presentations and active promotion of the service.Key Responsibilities -1:1 student support meetings, case-noting, record keeping, data collection and report writing. Advocating for students, assistance with study and employment preparation /resume writing assistance Promotion of the support service, class talks and networkingResearching and implementing appropriate internal and external referralsData collecting, weekly statistical analysis of service use for TAFE Community Engagement team.

My role as a Centre Officer/ Youth Worker consisted of undertaking a variety of different projects and facilitating weekly creative and running social youth groups and workshops. My focus was building strong rapport with diverse groups of young people who were considered high at risk, facilitate peer social groups, LGBTIQ+ Youth Support group and working with a grass roots approach to engaging and supporting youth (13 - 25 yrs).Key Responsibilities -Facilitator and supervision of weekly LGBTIQ+ and Arts groups of The Loft.
