Financial Planning And Analysis Manager
Business Analyst
When I became Business Analyst, the position was a new role, created in each of Berks Homes' three regions, to focus on job cost control. For 2022, I established the position for the South Central region, Berks Homes largest region with 2022 revenue of $71MM. Establishing the position involved the following:• Creating Excel-based queries to improve job cost analysis and reduce budget errors and purchase order variances• Troubleshooting errors on auto-generated purchase orders and coordinating with corporate estimator to resolve• Coordinating with other functional managers and establishing processes to reduce user mistakes• Staffing up the region's cost control teamAs a notable example, I created a process to track gross profit slippage from initial sales proforma to final job cost report. During my tenure at the region, slippage dropped from 4% to 2% of revenue.Beginning January of 2023, I established the corporate Business Analyst position, to develop tools and improve processes to support the three regional Business Analysts. For 2023, my primary project was supporting the cost control function of a new ERP system. System support included the following:• Training users (requiring me to become the system expert very quickly)• Adapting existing processes and establishing new processes• Identifying and resolving data conversion errors• Coordinating with other functional managers and software's support team to resolve software failures• Coordinating with in-house developers to add functionality
Senior Financial Analyst
My contributions as a financial analyst included the following projects:• Building Excel-based queries and macros to automate general ledger analysis and creation of adjusting journal entries• Continuing to lead year-end close processes, including producing internal combined financial statements, producing reconciled trial balances and supporting schedules for external CPA's, approving adjusting entries, reconciling internal management-basis statements to external GAAP statements, and analyzing debt service covenants and individual owners' equity positions• Land development operation: streamlining and enhancing Excel-based project proforma, improving net present value and internal rate of return calculations while preventing user error• Land development operation: establishing process to allocate budgeted project costs to individual lots sold, as well as to reconcile actual costs to budget, adjust budget accordingly, and allocate variance to remaining lots unsold• Supported refinance of $20MM+ in revolving lines of credit from 9 banks to a participating loan with 1 lead bank, including establishing new internal processes
Chief Financial Officer
First as Controller, and then as CFO, I led Berks Homes' accounting department through the following changes:• ERP conversion• COA conversion• New accounting methods to follow industry best practices• Combined financial reporting for multiple legal entities, focused on giving management a global view of financial performance (as opposed to individual statements, by entity, geared only to ownership)• New entity structure designed around separation of different business activities, simplicity of financial and credit analysis, and risk mitigationIn addition, I supported the following company-wide changes:• Growth from approximately $50MM to $100MM+• Expansion to three geographic regions• Transition to a decentralized management structure
Controller
Accounting Cash Manager
Assistant Controller
Assistant Controller
My time at Classic Communities is how I discovered my natural ability for accounting and financial analysis. I started as a temp, working on miscellaneous tasks, with my only accounting education being the basic college classes all business students must take. Yet I picked up enough accounting knowledge on the job to be formally promoted to an accounting position and to become the go-to person for any ad-hoc financial analysis. By the time I left, I was responsible for managing the cash flow for the company, with over $25MM in annual revenue.
Dance Faculty And Administrative Coordinator, Peabody Preparatory
In Peabody's Preparatory division, I taught pre-professional ballet to students aged 6 and up, as well as ballet for adults (both adult beginners and adults with training). In addition, I coordinated productions, events, class/rehearsal scheduling, marketing collateral, student registration, and parent/student communication. I also administered the Estelle Dennis/Peabody Dance tuition-free program for boys, which served underprivileged students.
Assistant Head Teller
My time at the bank included the conversion from Commerce Bank Harrisburg to Metro Bank. Due to how quickly and thoroughly I learned the new banking software, I was named a "Store Specialist" for the conversion. The Specialist role made me one of the leads in my store for executing the conversion.
Technical Analyst
I started at PHEAA in the loan consolidation call center, providing over-the-phone customer service. Ever an analyst and problem-solver, I noticed that some of my routine tasks seemed possible to automate. I took initiative. Thanks to having learned the basics of computer programming as a child from my dad, I was able to use VBA to automate several tasks. From there, I moved into a Technical Analyst role, focused on reporting and automation using SQL, VBA, and Excel.
