I'm a former newspaper journalist comfortable in a new media world. Working 20 years at newspapers around the country I learned to love hard-hitting, in-depth journalism. It's why in 2012 I helped co-found New Mexico In Depth, an organization committed to investigative, data-rich stories with an eye on solutions that can be a catalyst for change. We focus on the intersection of the state's low-income communities and criminal justice, health care and education systems. We also probe the nexus between money and lawmaking. New Mexico In Depth wasn't my first startup. In 2008 I helped create New Mexico's first online newspaper, the New Mexico Independent. By the end of its run in 2010, the Independent had become the go-to source for politics and important policy debates confronting New Mexicans. Over the past 12 years, New Mexico In Depth has changed state laws, sparked federal and state investigations, spotlighted racial profiling in policing and helped free a man from prison.
