About David Dorton

From Intern to Director of Public Affairs, my career with the City of Auburn has been dedicated to public service, focusing on public administration, communication, governmental and legislative affairs and technology.I was hired as an intern to assist in launching a new city newsletter, Open Line. Twenty years later, Open Line still ranks as a primary source of information for local residents according to our biennial citizen survey. After my internship, I worked as part of the city’s Information Technology Department. As an IT professional, I achieved some of the industry’s leading certifications. During this time I served as a computer and network technician for the City of Auburn and Auburn City Schools. I took the lead in producing and maintaining the city's website content as well as creating the city’s “eNotifier” email notification system for residents, and our digital process for producing and posting council agendas. As Director of Public Affairs, I served on City Manager Duggan’s Executive Team, which met regularly to discuss current city issues and brainstormed the first iteration of a re-organization that introduced business units to the city’s organizational structure. For almost fifteen years and under two city managers, I was also a member of the city’s management team. This team membership enabled relationships and access to information that has been key to my success in the role. With the creation of Public Affairs in the Office of the City Manager, I formally began to coordinate the city’s public affairs efforts, focusing on effective communication with residents as well as governmental and legislative affairs. I have also played a key role in working alongside the Assistant City Clerk and city management on the administration of local municipal elections. In 2016, I became Alabama's first and (as I write this) only Certified Public Communicator (CPC) through the Bob Schieffer College of Communication at Texas Christian University. Of course, all of this is only possible through the great team of Public Affairs professionals that I lead and work alongside daily. Thanks to the work my team is doing, I’ve truly learned the value of hiring talented professionals, and enabling them to do their best work. Many of my professional duties are also personal hobbies and passions, especially writing and photography. I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to use these skills in community service as a former member of the Board of Directors for Leadership Lee County and a current board member for the Food Bank of East Alabama.

  • City Of Auburn, Al
    Director Of Public Affairs
City Of Auburn, Al Oct 2009 - Present
    Auburn, Al, Us
With the creation of Public Affairs in the Office of the City Manager, I formally began to coordinate the city’s communications and legislative and governmental affairs efforts. To effectively communicate with residents, the Public Affairs team must employ all the tools of the public relations, communications and marketing trades. Guided by a strategic communications plan our goal is to make sure that residents have the resources they need to be informed citizens. In 2016, I became Alabama's first and (as I write this) only Certified Public Communicator (CPC) through the Bob Schieffer College of Communication at Texas Christian University. The governmental affairs side of the equation includes legislative tracking and analysis to enable communicating the city’s interests to elected officials and staffers at the state and federal levels. It also includes close interaction with the Alabama League of Municipalities and communications and legislative affairs staffers from other cities and counties, including Alabama’s “Big 10” cities.I play a key role working with the Assistant City Clerk and city management on the administration of local municipal elections, including keeping in close contact with Lee County on election issues.Under City Manager Duggan I served on the City Manager’s “Executive Team.” In addition to meeting regularly to discuss current City issues, we brainstormed towards the first iteration of a re-organization that introduced business units to the organizational structure. Business units have become a foundational part of the city’s organization in the years since, with every department a part of a larger business unit to enhance collaboration and communication. For almost fifteen years and under two city managers, I was also a member of the city’s Management Team. This team membership, the relationships it enabled and the access to information it provided was a key to my success and one of the most fulfilling elements of my career to date.
  • City Of Auburn, Al
    Assistant To The City Manager
City Of Auburn, Al Jul 2007 - Oct 2009
    Auburn, Al, Us
As Assistant to the City Manager, I had the rare opportunity to both assist City Management with day to day needs and help to define my own role in the organization based on both the needs of City Management and the aptitudes that I brought to the table. Starting with researching and writing informational pieces to provide factual information to the public on issues being discussed at the time, my role evolved towards organizational communications, public relations, policy research, legislative tracking and related communications, and more. This evolution led to the creation of the position of Director of Public Affairs.Much of my work as Assistant to the City Manager remained on the table even after transitioning to Director of Public Affairs. As such, over the years I’ve become adept at researching and analyzing the city code and Code of Alabama, playing a key role in the creation of public meeting agendas, processing public records requests, and interfacing with all departments and the City Attorney’s office while researching varied topics from legal requirements to best practices.
  • City Of Auburn, Al
    Intern/Network Technician/Network Engineer/Senior Network Engineer
City Of Auburn, Al Feb 2000 - Jul 2007
    Auburn, Al, Us
From Intern to Director of Public Affairs, my career with the City of Auburn has been dedicated to public service, focusing on public administration, public information and communication, governmental and legislative affairs and technology. I’ve worked in two city departments and with every city department, and have been exposed to virtually every functional area of city government. I was hired as an intern to assist in launching a new city newsletter, Open Line. Twenty years later, Open Line still ranks as a primary source of information for local residents according to our biennial citizen survey. The focus of my internship quickly came to focus on content production and management for the city’s then relatively new website. As technology has transformed the website in the years since, our initial focus on transparent access to information including the budget, council agenda and city news releases continues today. After my internship, I moved to the Information Technology Department. As an IT professional, I achieved some of the industry’s leading certifications including Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and Cisco Certified Network Administrator. I also served as a computer and network technician for departments and facilities in both the City of Auburn and Auburn City Schools, with work ranging from computer troubleshooting to installation of network cable and infrastructure in new facilities. Digital content production and web management continued as we improved and refined publication of press releases and dynamic information on the website. During this time, I also took the lead in creating the city’s “eNotifier” email notification system for residents, as well as the city’s digital process for producing and posting council agendas.
